A lot of hip-hop fans make a hard distinction between music for the club and music for the mind ( so-called “lyrical” music), but this distinction is mostly a fantasy. Songs like Snow Tha Product‘s “Play” show just how ridiculous this fantasy is. Snow is an amazingly technical rapper; she accelerates and decelerates her flow at will, she utilizes multiple rhyme schemes (sometimes within one bar), she can abruptly shout mid-flow without any build-up or inhalation, and apparently she even raps in Spanish. More impressively, she does these things on nearly every song, even party songs. According to some hip-hop fans, this should be impossible. Well, it isn’t.
On “Play,” Snow hypes herself into a frenzy, partying herself into a manic state that never loses intensity. There’s a reason why her latest mixtape is titled, “Good Nights and Bad Mornings.” Watch “Play” below.
