S.T.S is confused. People are actively desiring and purchasing things and services they can’t afford. Why would they do that? He’s not quite sure himself, but he recognized the disjuncture and decided to speak on it. Teaming up with producer Khari Ferrari Mateen, he asserts his confusion over a gravelly beat, using its choppy cadence to craft an interrupted flow that differs from his typical slick-tongued smoothness.
Things get really interesting when the beat becomes subdued and replaces its murky percussion with light chords and synths. Getting more sentimental, S.T.S. applies his confusion to himself, showing that it’s hard to stand above this confusing scenario, even when you recognize it. It’s kind of a cop-out, but at least it’s well-executed. Listen below. Maybe we as listeners can take this recognition and do something productive with it.
