LA singer Kelela is apart of the emerging collective of singers (SZA, Jessy Lanza, Twigs and more) who genuinely can’t be placed into any particular genre, even if you’re fairly knowledgeable of genre conventions and music history. Accordingly, there is no preface we can give you for her new mixtape, Cut 4 Me. It’s not R&B and it’s not really anything else, though it freely traverses that territory and other familiar places (house, soul) with a certain charming aloofness. Listen below and try to avoid categorizing it. Music is better when it’s allowed to roam.
