Smoke DZA and Harry Fraud have a proven affinity. Curren$y and Smoke DZA also have a proven affinity. Lastly, Harry Fraud and Curren$y have a proven affinity. With all these affinities, it was only right that the three artists combine their complementary powers. The result is The Stage, a brief and tranquil easy listen that’s perfect for a lazy afternoon or a long drive. Infinitely repeatable and alarmingly smooth, The Stage is a potent reminder that rap doesn’t have to make you #turnup to be powerful. In fact, Fraud seems to find power in being turned down. Sonically and temporally, the EP is significantly subdued; there’s nothing frantic or loud here.
The percussion is especially soft. “First Light,” for example, is driven by those sharp chords more than its drums or bass. That’s quite a deviation from your typical hip-hop production. More importantly, it’s a productive deviation. Curren$y and DZA actively use the downplayed percussion to focus more on the other elements of the instrumentals, subsequently enabling different flows and deliveries. Listen and download below. This is something to remember.
Side note: “Word to Terrance Howard’s du-rag” might be the line of the year.
