Video: Mister Cee Gives a PSA on Sexual Freedom and Safety

Legendary DJ Mister Cee has always been known in hip-hop for being the best at what he does. From introducing the world Biggie and Big Daddy Kane to constantly reminding the Tri-state area of the internal diversity of hip-hop via his knowledge of the genre, Mister Cee has and always will be a staple in hip-hop, especially New York hip-hop.

Last week, Mister Cee made the decision to resign from Hot 97 due to negative and homophobic backlash from legal issues he was having due to his solicitation of transgendered prostitutes. A day later he made an emotional return to the Hot 97 morning show to explain why he felt like he had to resign. Speaking at length with his boss Ebro and briefly with Funkmaster Flex, Mister Cee candidly wrestled with how he wanted to move forward in the wake of this regrettably public experience. The fact that this conversation was had on air and allegedly “for the listeners” is arguably exploitative, but that’s a conversation for another day…

As Mister Cee does some soul searching and figures out what is next and what is best for him, he is using his voice to team up with the AIDS Health Foundation to talk about the importance of sexual health and freedom. In the PSA, Cee let’s people know that it is okay to be sexually free, and that you don’t need to hide from anyone. He also explains the importance of being healthy, and getting tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

The PSA is a great way for Mister Cee to turn the negative into a positive, and to deal with the discrimination and judgment that he is facing. It’s very unfortunate that in 2013 we still feel so entitled to people’s business and how they live their lives. But it is fortunate that so many people, including Cee, are taking this very seriously and connecting it to hip-hop and even the issues beyond the music.
