Some voices are instantly familiar, effortlessly likable in their charisma and idiosyncrasy. Joey Purp has all of that. “The fuck is a blog? I’m killin’ these hoes / Niggas shop at the mall, ain’t feelin’ their clothes / Chance pass me the ball, Vic with the assist / Your sis’ all on my balls, your bitch fix me a dish,” isn’t the most clever or exciting line on paper, but to hear Joey Purp rap it, suddenly those four bars are fun, flashy, almost charming in how Joey draws out his last syllables and emphasizes his rasp. Another reason to watch Joey Purp: he wasn’t just randomly shouting out Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa; he’s part of the SAVEMONEY crew.
