Infamous for his 2007 number one hit “Crank That (Soulja Boy),” DeAndre Cortez Way is back with a new mixtape, Life After Fame. Originally intended to be released as an album, the mixtape went up for online download earlier this week.
Out of the 19 tracks, Soulja Boy ensures all the limelight stays on him by not featuring any artist other than himself. Although he still manages to channel his typical confident, high energy sound and attitude, Life After Fame is noticeably a more mature piece of work than his “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” and “Turn My Swag On” days. That’s not to say it’s a 180 degree turn from his former days; it just sounds a little more crafted. A little.
Since creating his own record label, Stacks on Deck Entertainment, back in 2004, Soulja Boy has been making moves and dropping new music like crazy. The King Soulja mixtape was released three months prior in May. Regardless of the plethora of new music, Life After Fame really shows listeners what the rapper has to offer and reinforces that in the end, it’s all about Soulja Boy and his “Pretty Boy Swag.” Never one to follow the crowd, it will be interesting to see what direction Soulja Boy takes his music in the near future. Dates for the Life After Fame tour have yet to be released.
