Mannie Fresh and the former Mos Def have dropped the first single from their highly-anticipated EP, OMFGOD. “Black Jesus” is an interesting introduction to the forthcoming project: it’s light, festive, unabashedly spiritual. The amiable vibe and Yasiin’s choice to sing for most of the track may catch listeners off guard, but this track will grow on you. It’s well rapped and well sung; the boy from Brooklyn is as infectious as ever. Near-tribal drums and an uplifting choral background provide the proper accompaniment to his relaxed voice. The beat is quite a departure for Mannie from “Go DJ,” and while it won’t be rattling dashboards anytime soon, it’s a solid addition to his catalog. Catch the unlikely duo in the first of their three-part behind-the-scenes video series here, and listen to “Black Jesus” below.
