Detroit’s double threat, producer-rapper Black Milk, has dropped a double feature of singles.
The first track, “Sunday’s Best” tells the story of Curtis‘ lazy-turned-sermon-filled Sunday. Backed by some typically soulful sounds, Black Milk impressively stretches a rhyme scheme that takes us all the way from the early morning details of “Moms pull out clothes this a Sunday spec’ occasion/bow tie, no lie church shoes was achin'” to his mind wandering away from the preacher, to “now we back to prayin’/old ladies with church fans screaming out–Amen.” Black Milk’s rhyming is more visual and flow-heavy than ever and the church samples compliment his snapshot nicely. See if you can catch the blink-and-you-miss-it Big L sample in the middle.
The second track, “Monday’s Worst” has two parts of its own. In the first half, our narrator is hungry and in need of a come up, closing his verse out with “somebody ’bout to stumble out that club drunk without havin’ that fuckin’ chain tucked/…bout to get that chain took,” which serves as clever lead in to the next verse. The second narrator is that fool flossing: “In the club, chain hangin,” are the first words out of his mouth. Our second man proceeds to meet our first in a bloody finale, and it makes for a strong two-part story song, which is lyrical territory Black Milk hasn’t much tried his hand at before. It’s some of his strongest rapping to date, and of course the soul-sampling beat is a winner. Stay on the look out for Black Milk‘s album coming this summer, and run along and buy “Sunday’s Best/Monday’s Worst” on iTunes here.
