For their Fall 2012 Collection, Stussy has chosen to draw their inspiration from the 1990’s comic series The Real Deal. With a story line by H.P McElwee (R.D Bone) and illustrations by Lawrence Howard (Raw Dawg), The Real Deal is a rarity in the comic book world, for it is one of the only contemporary independent comics published and created by African Americans. Published under the genre of “Urban Terro,r” the world of The Real Deal is “as underground as underground gets” depicting Los Angeles underworld life with deadpan visceral humor and gross-out violence. It’s this raw, crude, unadulterated, humor that has given The Real Deal a cult like following with only 6 issues in print since 1989.
Stussy will use Howard and McElwee’s vision on a series of The Real Deal T-shirts, with four designs featuring the same edgy imagery found in the comic. Here, the Stussy-Real Deal apparel will cost $24 a shirt. And just in case you still don’t know how awesome this shirt series is going to be, Stussy has blessed us with a short documentary video, detailing the secrets behind the story of The Real Deal. The video is narrated by Raw Dawg himself, with music by Los Angeles Funkmaster, Dam Funk!
