Cruz aka Federico Massa was recently spotted in Milan, Italy. The Italian Brooklyn-based artist experimented once again with his signature portraits. The pupil of Federico Massa’s eyes always shimmers, creating an appealing and lively figure. His mask-like figures brings the saying, “Plaster a smile on” to life. The viewers’ inability to tell whether the smiles are fake or not makes his work that much more intriguing.
Constantly finding innovative ways to depict basic face features, Cruz always surprises us. A recurrent symbol in his piece is a cross in his character’s forehead. Perhaps he feels compelled to put religion on the forefront of his work maybe? His characters are always inspired by a culture: whether it’s Mexico or marine life.
Cruz’s work is strengthen by his ability to convey emotions through a deeper use of colors. The artist always uses a particular shape for his character’s eyes. The only variation being their color, and each color is associated to a different emotion.
