Yesterday the hip-hop world took a massive hit to the jugular when the blog RappersIKnow wrote a wrenching post discussing a phone conversation between the writer and Jay Electronica in 2007 in which Jay said that he was a ghostwriter for Nas’ Untitled album. Ghostwriting has always been an elephant in the room in hip-hop, but hearing that one of the greatest lyricists of all time might have used one is devastating. Nas has always been put on a high pedestal for his deep, personal, intuitive, vivid lyrics but now what are fans left to believe? Is the rapper that we have all known and loved for over a decade a fraud or are people once again creating and spreading lies for the sake of publicity?
Though we all love hip-hop you have to admit that sometimes it’s one big ball of hypocrisy and fraudulence. People support artists who are toxic to the culture, while the true artists can barely get a blog post, let alone gold albums. The allegations about Nas are a serious blow and although he has yet to comment on it, we are patiently awaiting a response. Just last week Nas sat down with Big Boy from Power 106 where he straight up asked him “Have you ever used a ghostwriter”? Check out Nas’ response below.
