Digable Planets was a hip-hop group made up of three members: Butterfly, Doodlebug, and Ladybug Mecca. Each hailing from different cities, the three united in New York City to form Digable Planets in the early 1990’s. The trio gained popularity through use of multiple genres in their music that included jazz, funk, and hip-hop. A prime example of this was their first single, “Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)“. The song would eventually win a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, and propelled their debut album, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), to be certified gold. Part of the first verse was later sampled for E-40‘s “Yay Area” record in 2006. Other notable Digable Planets tracks are “Nickle Bags” and “Dial 7 (Axioms of Creamy Spies)“.
