At the Compound Gallery in Portland, Oregon’s Pearl District, artists throughout the downtown area have contributed to the annual “First Thursday” art celebration, showcasing diverse pieces from around the world.
Starting on September 1, Compound Gallery has teamed up with Nike’s graphic artists and designers to present a collection called the Nike Graphic Studio Art Show. Throughout the month of September, Compound Gallery will feature more than 20 different artists, celebrating the brand’s history, globally recognized athletes, and iconic designs. While we often see the likeliness of athletes displayed in several artistic mediums before, each piece is an original creation for the show.
“One of the most unique aspects of the show is that each likeness used in the show was actually cleared with the athletes themselves,” says Ira LaFontaine of Compound. “It adds an extra layer of authenticity to the work.”
From street stencil inspired art, to typography and 3D model work, to classic hand-painted canvases, all bring a different take to Nike’s rich and long history.
The exhibition’s proceeds will go in support of relief efforts in Japan, and the Nike Foundation will also match that donation amount.
