Like Charlemagne, I haven’t done much checking for Mac Miller since first hearing about dude. It’s true — when you play the “average dude” rapper archetype, it’s tough to get noticed if your mediocrity is just mediocre. (The solution: be weird and pass it off as unremarkable.) But it seems that Mac has picked up where Asher Roth left off, captivating both the college bros and the hip-hop heads, tacitly assuming the role of 2011’s great white hope. He gets the warm Power 105 welcome on “The Breakfast Club,” which always comes through with an insolently insightful interview; Charlemagne’s got him confused with Machine Gun Kelly, he flirts uncomfortably with Angela Yee, but Mac Miller means to hit heavy this fall when his début album hits the stores.
