What epitomizes summer more than summer league ball? Even if the NBA lockout seems to be moving in the wrong direction, basketball continues to thrill its fans. Last night, Kevin Durant showed up at Baruch College to play in the Nike Pro City League and didn’t disappoint the New Yorkers on hand. The league is home to a bevy of Euro-league, semi-pro and NBA players looking to stay in shape in the offseason. Mix that in with an emcee and a banging DJ and you’ve got yourself one hell of a basketball atmosphere. Durant’s team, in yellow, faced off against John Lucas III-led Big Apple Basketball (in purple). Durant’s team–bolstered by fellow NBAers Roy Hibbert and Sundiata Gaines, not to mention former Seton Hall point guard Andre Barrett–maintained an early edge, but Lucas led the comeback for Big Apple with 60 points of his own. The game would eventually go to overtime thanks to a Durant 3-pointer with just over five seconds to play (peep the sequence starting at 1:00). The OKC Thunder star would eventually will his team to victory in overtime, 146-143, while finishing with a modest 41 points and 7 assists. If y’all weren’t keeping track that’s 107 points (Durant scored 66 Monday at Rucker Park) in two nights for the two-time NBA leading scorer. If this isn’t enough excitement to move the owners and players to talk, we might have to check their pulses.
