Pitchfork may keep the gates of contemporary rock music, but it’s always suspicious of hip-hop unless there’s evidence of hipster-crossover appeal. That might explain their late pass in reviewing Kendrick Lamar’s Section.80, which dropped three weeks ago. Nonetheless, Tom Breihan granted the album an eight even on their holy scale, sentimentally justifying the high score with Souls of Mischief references aplenty. Too often, critics bind hip-hop (and music, for that matter) to geo-historical patterns in a vain attempt to understand where a new sound comes from. “There’s little-to-no link to his hometown’s gangsta-funk legacy in his music,” writes Breihan, but he misses the mark; Lamar creates his music almost directly in response to that very legacy, and the Souls similarity is a corollary of that. But whatever.
