Hodgy Beats x Pitchfork

Resisting Odd Future compatriot Tyler, the Creator‘s pledge to stab “hipsters with a pitchfork” (certain modifiers omitted), the resident Marilyn Manson fan of the group Hodgy Beats spoke with the crew at Pitchfork in advance of the OF tour of Europe and his own re-release of the MellowHype album BlackenedWhite. Hodgy talked the video for “64” (see above), his role within Odd Future, collaborating with Nas, and, of course, Earl.

On the video for MellowHype’s “64”:

People have seen the video, but they haven’t really watched it. Can you lay in a casket with snakes crawling over your fucking head and recite lyrics? I don’t know. It was pretty difficult to do some shit like that.

How he performs with Odd Future:

I’m getting more comfortable with what’s going on when I’m on stage. Everybody has a role to play in Odd Future. Tyler has asthma, so I have to be the hype nigga on stage. It’s like a basketball team.

Nas and other collaborations:

It will be Frank Ocean, Tyler, Hodgy Beats, and Nas. I’m just stoked to be on a song with him. I know I’ll meet him eventually. When I was younger, I met his father on an airplane. That was tight….I honestly don’t like working with people outside of Odd Future because I don’t want our sound to change. I want it to evolve, and that happens with people within the camp, not people outside the camp. When you make music, it should be fun. I’m not hating or anything, but I don’t want to be rapping over a Lex Luger beat. Why would I do that? I have my own beats.

Asked whether he has anything to say about Earl Sweatshirt:

Fuck everybody. You can suck my dick. If we can’t get in contact with Earl, you definitely can’t. He will come back when he’s ready, if he ever will be ready again. I haven’t spoken to Earl in a while. But everyone that’s digging for no reason, you’re just beating a dead horse. It’s dead.
