The French street artist JR won the TED prize this past week. The winners of award, which is handed out to “exceptional individuals,” receive $100,000. A nice bit of cash for JR’s free street art.
JR creates work for slums all around the world converting building exteriors in poor neighborhoods into a gallery space for huge blown-up photographs of the residents. Sometimes the photographs serve a practical purpose; in Kenya waterproof vinyl photographs became roofs for residents homes.
Yes, art can serve a purpose.
