You might call it your modern day Rapunzel story but for Thomas Moore, he wasn’t growing his hair out for someone to climb up it. He was growing it out for one special little girl: 5-year-old Khyrstin “Kyssi” Andrews. But Khyrstin wasn’t just any little girl; she was a little girl who was fighting for her life as she battled a rare form of kidney cancer which she beat but later developed lung cancer. Once then, 8-year-old Thomas heard her story and he decided right then and there to “stop” going to the barber for hair cuts and grow out his hair instead, so Khyrstin– who lost her hair due to the disease– could have hair again.
While Thomas Moore lives in Bowie, Maryland and Khyrstin lived in Texas, he was determined to grow out enough hair to give to her so she would not be without locks. When Thomas’ mom Angie Pulos, found out what her son had made up his mind to do – she was filled with joy.
“My heart melted,” Angie Pulos, Thomas’s mom, told The Huffington Post of the moment he announced his decision. “He’s so stinkin’ sweet.”
According to the Huff Post, Thomas grew his locks for 2 years to help Khyrstin. On September 10th at the age of 10, Thomas decided that it was now time to get his hair cut; Thomas’ hair had grown so much over that period of time until he had enough to make three wigs.
Once Thomas’ story got out, it went viral. When his Aunt posted the tweet below the following day after his big chop, the tweet had received over 120,000 likes and had been retweeted 62, 000 times. Unfortunately, Thomas was not able to donate the hair to Khyrstin “Kyssi” as he would have liked too; he didn’t find out until after his cut that she had passed away June 2015. However, he was able to still donate his hair to Reniece & Company, a salon located in Rockville, Maryland who specialize in wigs of this nature.

The salon is now working with Kyssi’s mom, Marla Jones to locate other participants who can use the hair that Thomas so faithfully grew and while Kyssi, may didn’t get the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful head of hair, it will be donated in her memory.
