Not everybody is an overnight success like the man of the hour, Desiigner. Not everybody can only have one official track released and get signed by a major label. Some people take the long road to triumph and instead opt for the slow blew and are often considered “slept on”. These artists know that feeling. Featuring tracks from Masego, Asaiah Ziv, and more; here is this weeks segment of With All Due RESPECT.: 5 Songs You’ve Been Sleeping On. Check out the track below and let us know what you think in the comment section!
Masego – “Too Much”
After capturing the attention of millions with last years Pink Polo EP, Virgina native Masego returns with another one in his new project, Loose Thoughts. Although the tape it’s self is pure fire — you should be hearing “Send Yo’ Rita!” every where pretty soon — it’s the track “Too Much” that grabbed my attention. Crooning “It takes too much too much too much to entertain ya” over smooth sax melodies, the self titled “Mr. I Do Everything” exhibits his signature TrapHouseJazz style in full force on this bouncy new track. Check out the track below and give a listen to his new project, Loose Thoughts.
Don Mykel – “Nocturnal (Feat. Anthony King)”
Harlem native Don Mykel has been building quite a buzz lately. After turning Sway In The Morning into his personal lyrical playground with this freestyle, many have taken notice of the young hotspitter. Proving his not just an internet fad, Mykel silenced the doubters with his creative new tape, G.O.D Mykel: The Martyr. Particularly it’s the track, “Nocturnal” that’s got me buzzing. Pairing Mykel’s dense bars and double time flow with Anthony King‘s melodic vocals, “Nocturnal” is a soothing but sobering tune. Bars like “I’m only 10 writing poems in pop’s basement” give insight into the experiences that made him the artist he is today. Check out the track below and be sure to give G.O.D Mykel: The Martyr a listen.
Foggieraw. – “Pull Up 2 Ya (Feat. Jayizms)
Though lyricism takes a back seat to melodies and drum kicks, Maryland rep Foggieraw. (formerly known as Jayo) provides a vibey new track in “Pull Up 2 Ya“. Sampling my second favorite Brandy song ever — nothing can top “I Wanna Be Down” — in “Talk About Our Love“, the song is a short but head knocking track that captures your attention with upbeat synths and tough drum kicks. With only 20K plays, the bandwagon definitely has room currently, but don’t wait too long. Check out the track below.
Asaiah Ziv – “Sonder (Feat. POW & Luna)”
Las Vegas native Asaiah Ziv is no stranger to controversy nor struggle. After releasing a breakthrough album on the Christian Billboard charts with his debut, Murder My Flesh, Ziv — formerly known as KIDD — decided to renounce his faith in the Christian religion. Subsequently his creative direction changed and I’m not gonna complain because it gave us the masterful project, Free Your Soul [Side A], and the fantastic track, “Sonder“. Enlisting fellow Sin City natives, POW (who absolutely steal the show) and Luna, “Sonder” is relatable track about the woes of life which culminate with the bars, “I’ve been smoking too much lately I need to chill/ They told me I’m in control of my will/ They told me the truth is never revealed/ They told me time’s the only way you heal/ But I guess”. Take my advice and stop sleeping on Ziv now, because the KIDD has next. Check out the track below and be sure to give Free Your Soul [Side A] a listen.
YK – “See”
Growing up, the legendary Houston group Geto Boys were one of my favorite groups (many folks didn’t understand why a mixed kid from California loved southern music so much), so when I heard Bushwick Bill had a son that rapped I just had to listen. I was not disappointed. Going by the name YK, which stands for Young Knowledge, the Houston boy impresses with his infectious track, “See“. The trappy beat compliments YK well as his flow patterns alter from .45 to AK with ease. Bump this at your next party and watch the people go wild. Check out the track below.
