R&B singer, Brandy has filled a lawsuit against her record label, alleging they have been blocking the singer from recording and releasing new music.
The songstress is headed to court for a $1 million dollar lawsuit against Chameleon Entertainment Group. Norwood claims that her deal with Chameleon gives the label the option of releasing four more records but says they have kept her from recording new music in the last four years. She adds that the label’s refusal to let her record music is an attempt to get her to sign on to a new record deal with Epic Records. In the suit it’s stated that Breyon Prescott, the owner-CEO of Chameleon, who is also employed full time by Epic Records, where he heads the urban A&R department, forced her to sign with Epic and release music through his imprint, so he can double his profit.
According to Courthouse New Service, the singer is asking for $1 million in compensatory damages, plus punitive damages, for intentional interference with contract, interference with business relations, and business law violations. The suit also refers to this as “a blatantly unlawful attempt to bully Norwood into signing a new recording and distribution agreement containing terms far worse than her current agreement” and that “defendants have made clear through their actions and words that, unless Norwood capitulates and signs this terrible deal, she will remain ‘trapped’ with a label that won’t let her record or release music.” Since filling, Brandy has relinquished her contract with Chameleon, and is asking the judge’s ruling that it is void.
The “Almost Doesn’t Count“ singer signed with Prescott’s company in 2011, prior the release of her 2012 album, Two Eleven through his imprint.
Since pursuing legal action Brandy has released a new song titled “Beggin & Pleadin” through her own imprint, Slayana Records.
Representatives for both parties did not respond when asked for a comment.
