The Zombies of Flatbush have finally come through with their album, 3001: A Laced Odyssey. What is there to find within this 12-track body of work? There’s plenty to explore as you enter their space (double entendre). It’s Brooklyn meets a space voyage. As they find themselves usually doing, they elevate the mind in the form of words and Erick Arc Elliot production. There is a lot of growth from Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick. The “Beast Coast” movement continues to sprout with this new release from Flatbush Zombies.

“Bounce” was released as a single in the earlier part of February. Arguably being one of the few tracks that feel like vintage Flatbush, the title was relevant to the feel of the production.

You may have noticed Kanye West’s tweets that spoke on the death of CD’s. We are unlikely to ever get a physical copy of a Kanye West CD, and the same may go for the Zombies.

During their track “R.I.P.C.D.,” they speak on the generational changes that we’re in the midst of.

“R.I.P. to the CD can’t even play my hits, cause new computer sh*t without the means to play this sh*t.”

The group gets nostalgic during the song, saying “reload the memory, they got me feeling like we’re nothing like we used to be.”

An advantage to listening to this project, is that it doesn’t take long for the group to dive into the song, letting you decide if you like the song early on.

However, we encourage that you check out their debut album all the way through, if time is on your side. Enjoy your listen.

Last Wednesday night the Flatbush Zombies finished off the last show of their first ever headlining tour. Since its kickoff in late August, the Better Off Dead Tour hit 31 North American cities before finally closing out in Trilladelphia, Pistolvania. Along the way, the Zombies and their opening acts, Bodega Bamz and Dillon Cooper, performed at both the Rock the Bells Music Festival and the North Coast Music Festival, while also making appearances on Action Bronson‘s headlining tour in Texas. While other venues along the tour route may have been bigger or more well known, the small crowd that jam packed Philly’s Barbary night club definitely came ready to show some love to their east coast neighbors.

Dillon Cooper, the 20 year old emcee from Brooklyn (who’s laid back, retro style has been compared to that of fellow Brooklynites Joey BadAss and The Underachievers) was first to perform. His newest cut, “State of Elevation,” was a particular crowd favorite and helped to transition the Eagles and Phillies fans into a more New York state of mind.

Next up was Bodega Bamz, who served as the hype before the storm. His performance of “Told Ya” drove fans into a frenzied mosh pit, but luckily there were no causalities. Unfortunately, there was no guest appearance by frequent collaborator A$AP Ant (but we definitely held our breath).

Of course, the principal players of the night, Meechy Darko, Zombie Juice, and Erick Arc Elliot laid their final performance down proper. Amerikkhan Pie, Death 2, and Live from Hell almost ended a few lives, but the enthusiastic crowd loved every minute of it- especially when Darko, drenched from head to kicks in sweat (and maybe blood and tears) nose dived into the audience for an incredibly intimate crowd servicing experiencing. Check out close up photos from the event, as well as small timeline to summarize the Zombies first ever headlining circuit.

All three Zombies and their tour sidekick Bodega Bamz absolutely rip the cypher, and no small part of the excitement is due to the feral and funky beat playing through the tour bus’ speakers. Meech also (as always) stands out here, dropping a couple quotables: “We all liars, so I guess we all lawyers / If you ain’t loyal, you should be in the soil,” “New day, different ho, same shit, same toilet / Punchlines better than that smack ya been snortin’,” and “That ain’t the beat banging, that’s the rumble in my tummy” are all vintage Meech. Catch these dudes live, they’ll give you a violently good time. Via a YouTube video posted last night, Erik Arc Elliot, Meechy Darko, and Zombie Juice released the curious date–9/11/13–of their date of their new, self-released project, Better Off Dead. The promo video also serves as a sneak peek to the visuals and audio for a new video directed by Phillip T. Annand. So far, the video has mixed reviews: the Zombie fans are pumped after months of soft release dates, and sneaker fans are appalled at Darko‘s choice of kicks to rock while digging a ditch.
The vibe in Red Hook Tuesday, June 4th was indescribable. The Underachievers and The Flatbush Zombies turned the park into a war zone (complete with thick, blinding “fog” spreading across the field) for the approximate hour they conquered the stage. Moshes, stage dives, reckless activity–if you name it, it probably happened at this concert. Although it was wild, the love and aforementioned friendly fumes were in the air. For the two Brooklyn-bred groups, the concert felt like the most fitting of homecomings, one fraught with the endearing nihilism that composes their quickly-ascending styles.

The Underachievers took the stage around 7 PM, and got the energy rolling, performing tracks from their debut tape Indigoism. They also performed a new track that will be featured on their upcoming project. This show meant a lot to Ak and Issa: it was their first chance to rock in the borough that raised them. To celebrate that, they performed “New New York,” a track they had never done live before. The energy reached its peak, though when the UA performed their hard-hitting weed anthem “Herb Shuttles.”

After a brief intermission, a familiar voice began to screech out an a-capella, and avid fans, recognizing who they were hearing, turned their briefly-lost attention to the still-empty stage. A moment more of buzzing and mild crowd confusion passed before a very animated Zombie Juice stormed the stage, finished his double-time verse and did his signature WWF-esque intro for his fellow Zombies. When Meech and Eric Arc Elliott joined him on stage, the trio wasted no time getting into their set. They started off with “Mraz”, one of their tightest songs, so immediately the crowd was engaged. As they reminded the audience, it is important to note that the Zombies had just gotten back from a 24 hour plane ride from Australia the previous night, and they were still giving the loyal crowd their all. Meech expressed how happy he was to be back home, saying “I could kiss the fucking soil right now,” which led to rabid applause. Towards the end of the show, the Zombies got down with a new track from their upcoming project Better Off Dead which was very well received, and indicated that the upcoming project would not stray from the FBZ formula. (A side note: though he’s easily the least recognizable or celebrated member of the group, Eric Arc Elliott proved to be an extremely energetic, valuable performer, a presence that was easy to connect to.)

The fact that they were blessed with an unreleased joint raised the stakes a bit, but what really gave the night a special feel was that, in the middle of their set, the Zombies brought out Remy Banks, A$AP Ant, and Bodega BAMZ to perform “3Flips6,” “Thrilla,” and “Balth Salt.” Thanks to sound problems, though, the set almost ended with the crowd haphazardly and half-proficiently chanting Meech’s opening bars to the A$AP Mob / Flatbush Zombie collaboration. Luckily, after about ten minutes of fretting and tinkering, “Bath Salts” blared back on, followed by the two other smashes that had been absent from the set: “Thug Waffle,” and “S.C.O.S.A.” The momentous, rollicking night closed with Meech’s infamous saying “Open Your Fucking Mind.” He’s right to repeat it; open minds are what allowed for groups as weird and downright disgusting sounding as the Zombies or as fashion-centric and eclectic as the A$AP Mob to reach the heights they have. Salute to the Zombies, A$AP, and The Underachievers for putting on a great free show.

Peter Rosenberg isn’t the only one that can put on “A Night of Real Hip-Hop.” Last night, in a smoke filled Music Hall of Williamsburg, Converse proved they know a bit about the New York rap scene as well. The show’s promoted roster included sets by Tanya Morgan, Meyhem Lauren, Flatbush Zombies and, the headliner, Action Bronson, but we all know it ain’t hip-hop without the surprise guests. RESPECT., only made it in for the Zombies and Bronsolino (security at free concerts is bananas), but we managed to walk in alongside A$AP Rocky, so really, we arrived with the party.

Being a photo journal of hip-hop culture and all, we’ve got a slideshow of the evening to bring you right there on stage with us. Luckily, the Zombies and Bronson are a photogenic bunch. Zombie Juice (Mr. Neon hair and beard) makes facial expressions more animated than cartoon characters; Chef Bronson, who looks a bit fatter in person, showed tremendous amounts of love to the crowd throwing out hundreds of dime bags, joints, Gucci and Converse sneakers and a steak dinner, (signing bonus spendings? Sharing is caring). And of course, that Pretty Motherfucker with his all smooth everything, who took a stage dive the moment he appeared before the moshing crowd. It was a night of great music, good vibes and fan appreciation. Take a look.
