Lil Yachty drops surprise mixtape Lil Boat. From the Yeezy Season 3 runway to a project that seems to have appeared from the thin Atlanta air, Yachty’s rise has been anything but orthodox. Red beaded braids, gold teeth, and pioneering mentality, the Sailing Team front man’s gurgle-rap sound and drowned out sonics make for a drug-fueled, trippy narrative from the quirky mind of the Lil Boat artist. Sitting at 14 cuts, Lil Boat is a windy path of masterful off-key notes, hilariously adroit punchlines, and a tangibly relatable simplicity. Yacht’s “Minnesota” remix enlists the help of Migos’ Quavo and Young Thug and is the major standout from the project, but records like “Not My Bro, “Good Day,” (w/ Quality Control’s Skippa Da Flippa) and “1Night” give us a fist hand look at what happens when quirky meets musical evolution. Lil Boat is youth; a first-hand rendering of an Atlanta wave that continues to bend and flip the original ideal of Hip-Hop sound. Lil Boat (and Yachty himself) exist somewhere between an eclectically-driven rock star and a Hip-Hop character whose identity is nearly as intriguing as the actual music itself. Sure, the Kanye co-sign has placed Yachty in a very fortunate position, but in a time where appearance can take precedence, the 18-year old ATLien is absolutely seizing the moment. And the boat imagery? Flawless.

Yesterday Kanye West unveiled his new shoe collaboration with Adidas, the Yeezy 750 Boost, in New York to an audience that included industry heavyweights, such as Beyonce, Rihanna, Diddy and Anna Wintour. The new Yeezy’s, which have hypebeasts going wild, will retail for $350 this Valentine’s Day in limited quantities (9,000 pairs).

During the show Kanye also debuted a new song featuring Vic Mensa and Sia, entitled “Wolves.” The auto-tuned and minimalistic track has the same raw emotion that can be found on his 2008 hit “808s & Heartbreak.” “Wolves” was produced by Cashmere Cat and Sinjin Hawke and will be the first track on his new album, which has yet to be titled. Praise Yeezus. The new Kanye West album has proof of existence, we just can’t listen to it yet. Yesterday, Thelophious London, who’s allegedly heavily featured on Kanye’s new record posted a photo on Instagram of himself and Kanye at Paris Fashion Week. London writes that he remembers “Kanye playing his new album 3 times” and “moshing drunk with mad babes.” We can only wait patiently and until the new Kanye is released, be jealous of the 20 people who were able to listen to this at his private listening party. Get ready Balenciaga fan-boys/American pop culture, Yeezy season approaching.
