RiFF RaFF and Katy Perry were undoubtedly embodied the VMA spirit last night. The two wore a Versace Couture denim outfit inspired by Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake‘s 28th Annual American Music Award outfit from 2001. “WE’RE GOIN FOR DA BEST WORST DRESSED TODAY #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS,” tweeted Perry earlier on Sunday. “I must admit my outfit is a result of my love for nostalgia and my tumblr addiction #THISISHOWWEDOVMAS,” she continues.

The outfits were perfectly tailored and showcased how the musical couple does it: loud, fun and memorable. Britney herself was a fan of the look. She messaged Perry saying: “Just when I thought the denim dress had retired….you bring it back! You looked amazing tonight bb.”

It’s no secret that Miley Cyrus’ VMA twerk-fest will go down in the VMA history books. Like various other VMA performers, Miley has made use of her unceasing media attention and released a new single titled “Wrecking Ball.” This is the second single from her album Bangerz, expected to release Oct. 8.

Despite her immense efforts to establish a name in the hip-hop world, “Wrecking Ball” just might make crossing over harder than expected. The track is surprisingly very reminiscent of the old Miley and goes to show that buzzing your hair and shaking your alleged ass can only change so much.

While the well- established producer Mike WiLL, made “We Can’t Stop,” have a slight hip-hop edge, the same just can’t be said for Cyrus’ second single.  However, Cyrus does successfully show off her vocals and lays down a slow, ballad track that will no doubt please her die hard fans.

Artists often produce material that strays from their usual sound. But if Cyrus is still looking to gain respect from the hip-hop world, she might want to check her musical direction. Cyrus is set to appear on Mike WiLL’s debut single “23,” which drops Sept. 10. Perhaps then we will see a bounce back to Miley Cyrus: [adopted] hip-hop princess. Only time will tell. Dreams do come true. Last night Tyler, The Creator won the VMA for Best New Artist of 2011 for his video Yonkers (peep our exclusive story on the making of that video here). After his acceptance speech with the whole wolf pack, he took to the media alone and shocked some of the unsuspecting press. Definitely worth a watch.
