Last night’s Oscar’s (Sunday February 26^th) was filled with jokes, inspiring speeches, a quick tour through the Oscars for unsuspecting tourists and a mix up for Best Picture. Oscar envelope person you had one job!

One of the most empowering speeches of the night came astronaut/engineer Ansari who accepted the award for Best Foreign Language Film on behalf of Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (The Salesman), who boycotted the ceremony in light of Trump’s controversial travel ban. She read a statement from the director that said: “Filmmakers can turn their cameras to capture shared human qualities and break stereotypes of various nationalities and religions,” Ansari read. “They create empathy between us and others — an empathy we need today more than ever.”

The Oscars not only have African Americans being nominated for either the first or second time, there’s also three ladies taking up the three out of five slots in the Best Supporting Actress Category.

Viola Davis

Davis, will be making history as being the first African American woman to receive three Oscar nominations. Davis delivered a powerful performance in Fences where she co-starred alongside academy award nominee, Denzel Washington. This has been an awesome year for Davis who just recently received a star on the Hollywood walk of Fame.

Octavia Spencer

Spencer got the Oscar nod after portraying Dorothy Vaughn in Hidden Figures. The film chronicles the story of three black women who worked at NASA and helped put men into orbit. If won, this would be Spencer’s second Oscar win.

Naomi Harris

Harris also received an Oscar nod for her portrayal of Paula, in the film Moonlight where she plays a drug addicted mother who faces conflict as she tries to raise a son, who has his own issues and problems to face.

According to US Weekly, social media has been ablaze with comments in how the Oscars has changed within the last year. A couple of people took to social media to express their excitement over this years selections:

“So great to see so many black artists nominated for Oscars this year!”

“I’m so excited the Academy Awards nominated 3 incredible, talented, strong black women 4 BSA! It’s abt damned time! #Hopeful #Change #Oscars.”

With this type of news, the Oscars may be looking to have a bright future in more show viewings. Let’s just hope this new change in diversity, sticks around. The 89th Academy Awards will air live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on ABC February 26th at 8:30 p.m.

Viola Davis finally got her star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame. The actress was honored on Thursday January 5^th with the first Walk of Fame star to be issued in 2017.

Davis planned to treat the event nonchalantly and deliver a straightforward speech but that quickly changed when she hit the podium. The actress delivered an emotional speech that mentioned her late father. “I was going to treat this like every other day. I wasn’t going to cry or anything. The only thing I could think about is my dad,” she told the gathered crowd. “I wish he were here.” Her father died in 2006.

Davis then reflected on her upbringing in Rhode Island saying, “The only picture I have of myself as a kid in kindergarten is with a little … sucker and an expression that’s not really a smile, not really a frown, just something. But every time I look at the little girl, I always thought, ‘Oh, that’s a cute outfit but she was always hungry, she was always shy, she was always kind of in the background, but inside she had big dreams bursting. And the only thing I could think about is that saying, ‘What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls the butterfly’.”

Longtime friend of Davis, Oscar winner Meryl Streep (the two starred in Doubt together), also spoke at the presentation. “Viola Davis is possessed of a blazing, incandescent talent and she is the most generous, present person I know. The thing Viola can’t do is be invisible. She just can’t do it. She can’t fade away; she can’t recede; she can’t be forgettable. Viola Davis is inevitable. She is like a sure thing, and her star has been waiting here patiently for 50 years for her.”

Viola Davis later returned the compliment, saying “I cannot believe my life right now that Meryl Streep spoke at my Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony with my handsome husband and a beautiful daughter.”

The actress has an impressive resume that includes an Emmy Award for “How to Get Away with Murder,” which returns for its third season Jan. 19. She also has a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the screen adaptation of Fences, which is playing in theaters now.

“In the moment, it hit me,” Davis said. “So many moments since I turned 50 … it’s doing the work, and as a result of the work, my life is coming to fruition.”

The trailer for the highly anticipated dramatic film Fences is here, starring and directed by Denzel Washington with co-star Viola Davis. The rendition from the well known 1983 play written by August Wilson takes place in the 1950s about the life of a former baseball player named Troy (Washington) and his family, Rose (Davis) as his wife and their son played by Jovan Adepo.

The teaser reveals a riveting, intense monologue from Washington to his son while displaying captivating  scenes  that are sure to leave audiences full of emotions. The warm, antique tones provide an old-fashioned feel for a timeless story wrapped around family tension of denying his son’s dream and an affair that challenges them all.

Davis, of course, delivers a moving performance in the short clip that is sure to claim her a spot in the Oscar nomination, even though the film is primarily focused on Washington who is also likely to secure a position in the awards discussion. In a statement made by Washington, “If there’s 25,000 words in the play, we’re using them all, but I framed it…it was an organic process where scenes could take place.”  Davis’ role has been greatly awaited due to her history with the play. Davis and Washington co-starred in a praised revival of Fences on Broadway back in 2010. She later won a Tony Award for her performance as Rose. Earlier in the month, Davis was nominated for her consistent remarkable performance in the ABC drama, How To Get Away With Murder, although she didn’t win, Davis will continue to drive us with her compelling talent in this cinematic experience.

The critically acclaimed debut of Fences will hit theaters on December 25th.
