Future – HNDRXX

It’s clear that Future is gunning for two back-to-back number one albums with his latest album HNDRXX, which follows last week’s self-titled release. In contrast with the previous effort (which seemed to be geared toward the streets), this go ’round sees the Atlanta veteran returning to what landed him amongst his commercially-successful peers in the first place — catchy hooks and stretched out melodies (a clear precursor to today’s Young Thug). In addition, The Weeknd and Rihanna join Future on his latest effort.

SIDEBAR: HNDRXX doesn’t arrive without controversy…many are speculating that Future’s 2017 releases are designed to settle a debt with former friend Rocko, who he’s been going back and forth with lately following Rocko’s lawsuit against him. For the record, Future denied these rumors, yet what’s being handled behind closed doors remains to be seen.

Thundercat – Drunk

Thundercat is back with the official follow-up to 2015’s The Beyond / Where The Giants Roam, a 23-track effort that sees the Brainfeeder artist/musician collaborating with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Kamasi Washington, Pharrell Williams and Wiz Khalifa…there’s even a beautifully-funky collaboration with legendary duo Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald (“Show You The Way”).

Stormzy – Gang Signs & Prayer

Expect this one to be one of the biggest albums from the UK (and perhaps the world) this year: South London rapper Stormzy has finally liberated his long-awaited project, titled Gang Signs & Prayer. Not only does this release further solidify Stormzy standing as one of the hardest emcees out right now (whether in Grime or Hip-Hop), it also expands Stormzy’s sound into other ranges, including Gospel (which isn’t as surprising nowadays, thanks to artists like Chance The Rapper).

Gang Signs & Prayer (or GSAP) boasts 16 tracks and appearances from Wretch 32, Ghetts, Kehlani, J Hus, MNEK and even currently-incarcered Grime legend Crazy Titch, who sends a big message on one of the album’s interludes via phone call.

NAV – NAV

Largely known as The Weeknd‘s secret weapon, artist/songwriter/producer NAV premieres his debut album to the masses. The self-titled effort comes with 11 tracks and — aside from NAV handling most of the album himself — also features contributions from the likes of Metro Boomin and the aforementioned XO boss.

Thundercat is a true gem in the music world. The past couple of years have seen the bassist acting as the critical backbone for Kendrick Lamar‘s critically-acclaimed To Pimp A Butterfly and breaking (further) out on his own with his third solo release The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam…he’s also contributed his genius to several other projects by the likes of Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin, Ty Dolla $ign, Mac Miller, Kirk Knight and — of course — Flying Lotus.

Now, the Brainfeeder artist is back with a fourth full-length offering titled Drunk, which comes with one of the dopest album covers imaginable (above). Presumably, the 23 (!) track project — which features contributions from Kendrick, Wiz Khalifa, Pharrell Williams and more — will keep with some kind of alcohol-infused concept; a look at the tracklisting sees songs like “DUI”, “Drink Dat” and the title cut.

This week, Thundercat drops off a nostalgic, syrup-y smooth track from Drunk titled “Show You The Way”, which features (wait for it) Kenny “Footloose” Loggins and freakin’ Michael McDonald, which is every bit as awesome as one would expect it to be. It’s both a blast from the past and a journey to the future simultaneously, thanks to classic vocals, spacey, somewhat-psychedelic keys and — of course — that magnetic signature bassline. In a recent Red Bull Music Academy sit-down, Thundercat (real name: Stephen Bruner) spoke on working with the timeless legends of Rock & Soul:

These are guys that I’ve listened to and where I felt that I’ve learned that honesty in the music. Kenny Loggins is one of my favourite songwriters… I think one of the most beautiful moments of it was realizing how amazing Michael McDonald was. He would go through so many ideas and have so much to offer.

Here we go with another very dope visual experience brought to us by Kendrick Lamar and his camp. “These Walls” is the next single off his sophomore album To Pimp a Butterfly, so it was only right that King Kendrick bring us a thought-provoking video that oozes of creativity and entertainment. The comedic video features guest appearances from Corey Holcomb and Terry Crews (One scene even depicts Kendrick and Terry hitting the Quan). I’ll stop typing and let the video speak for itself. Props to Kendrick for continuously raising the bar with his art.

Despite rain and cold weather, D.C.’s Broccoli City Fest was on fire!  The festival’s objective is to promote healthier and more environmentally friendly lifestyles in cool and relevant ways. With healthy food truck alternatives, on-site spinning and yoga classes, and a strict recycling policy, Broccoli City Fest did just that.

The festival featured an amazing lineup on its big stage. Virginia songstress, Abir used her soulful sound to bring good vibes to the crowd, while Chicago’s Tink got the crowd turned up, despite the rain. Later, Willow and Jaden Smith brought their energy (and dance moves) to the stage as they performed. Joey BadA$$ started a moshpit as he performed hits from B4.DA.$$ with Kirk Knight and Statik Selektah.

Headliner Erykah Badu closed out the show with Thundercat on the bass. During her set, the songstress transformed into her alter ego DJ Lo Down Loretta Brown and played a plethora of tracks including Tyler, The Creator’s, “Fucking Young/Perfect” and some Outkast to which she shouted over the mic “My baby daddy, Y’all!” Before she left the stage, Erykah gave an awesome DC tribute!
