]]> Kenneth Whalum Away Big K.R.I.T.Though imagery referencing cars, roads and traveling is a staple of Big K.R.I.T‘s aesthetic, life on the road is daunting. Quite the opposite of magnets, the further you venture from home, the stronger its attraction. Reflecting on this paradox, Kenneth Whalum and Big K.R.I.T. join forces for a jazzy, cadenced exploration of homesickness. The song is subdued and paced, quietly yet powerfully emphasizing distance and loneliness. Whalum‘s soft vocals oscillate between longing and hope, beginning the song with an extended, despondent wail and ending it with, “You can find joy back home.” K.R.I.T. occupies the center of the track, discussing the death of a loved one while he was away and vowing to return home soon.

Beyond the vocals, the track is driven by a patient piano, anxious drums and a critical change in tone toward the end of the song. Whalum is a composer, tenor saxophonist and arranger and all of these skills shine on the song. His upcoming album, Through Hell & Highwater, should be an interesting listen.
