Mick Jenkins releases “Wave[s]” Mixtape

Just moments ago, Mick Jenkins casually released the first listen to his H2O themed project “Wave[s]” (via NPR) Prior to this album, he released his highly appreciated “The Waters“ project last year that drew much attention, collaborating with artists like Noname Gypsy, Pro Era’s Joey Bada$$, The Mind and Jean Deaux. On this mixtape, you can look forward to hearing “P’s & Q’s” for which he recently released a visual, as well as production from Kaytranada and Them People, and only three features from Sean Deaux, Saba, and The Mind. There’s no question that Mick Jenkins makes everything sound like gold while leaving us to ponder on his consistent advice to “drink more water“. Be sure to peep “Wave[s]” below.

Mick Jenkins Announces Tour with STWO

Mick Jenkins has announced a 31-date U.S. tour (there’s three stops in Canada). With his The Water[s] follow-up Wave[s] on its way it seems like the perfect time for the Chicago MC to go back on the road. STWO will be supporting Jenkins at 29 of the tour stops. New Video: Mick Jenkins – “Jazz”

We’ve been excited about Mick Jenkins ever since we stumbled upon last year’s Trees & TruthsLP. This release of “Jazz” a new single and video from the rapping Chicago monk is the best indication we’ve had so far that the upcoming The Water[s]is going to surpass what we’d previously hoped for. Trusting his percussive rhymes and authoritative statements to hold our attention, Mick barely raises his voice over a mostly-hushed instrumental, cutting cleanly through the bullshit and ails of the world to bring what he would call The Water. Likewise, the truly astounding video shows a young boy and his friend taking the water from those who sell it to the people for sky-high prices. Like revolutionaries, they give it out for free, water bottle in the air. Something about the vignette-nature of this video, or the way it pairs with the music, or the fact of its complex, wordless story, is special beyond compare to a video of recent memory.

New Music: Mick Jenkins – “Free Nation Rebel Soldier Pt. 2”

“Next best out the chi and i ain’t really leaving room for debate on that,” tweeted Mick Jenkins yesterday, not long after releasing “Free Nation Rebel Soldier Pt. 2” from the upcoming The Water(s). That tweet is also the dynamic track’s closing line, and after listening to Mick take undeniable flight over a glitchy, humble 6thBoro beat, dropping head-turning line after bone-chilling flow, the room for debate really does begin to shrink.

Mick’s lines beat you over the head–“Why is it so hard to grasp that concept / Why the simple shit on the cover of complex?”–some sprout more meaning the more you consider them–“I promise you the waters is coming / Saying it everyday got me feeling like Noah”–and do both, building upon eachother and creating a fully realized, deeply impactful moment–“Ain’t tryna live life too B.I.G. it might stop / Stay ready to die, am I Pac?! / Holograms of the southside / I be blessed just to make it back to my spot!/ Steppin over squares like hopscotch I’m top notch.” Between this and his showing on “Forever” with Alex Wiley (who you also should not sleep on), Mick Jenkins damn well better be on your radar.
