Logic’s Incredible True Story Tour 2016

Twenty-five-year-old Maryland rapper Logic’s rap career has been defined by two seemingly contradictory through-lines: on the one hand, relentless criticism; on the other, a cult following. With four mixtapes and his debut album, Under Pressure, under his belt, the Def Jam signee’s sophomore effort, The Incredible True Story, comes with weighted expectations, both good and bad. It may just silence a few of his critics, if not all of them — The Incredible True Story delivers a multi-faceted aural experience.

Set against a sci-fi backdrop, The Incredible True Story follows two “post-Earth” individuals on a journey to Paradise nearly 100 years into the future. The show gets a head start with a dope futuristic video intro, while “Fade Away” finds Logic spitting over dense bass, layers of vocal jazz-esque harmonizing and a bouncy, snapping drum beat. The utopic odyssey jumps into high-gear with the 6ix-produced “Like Whoa,” followed by ’90s-style cut “Young Jesus,”.

I understood Logic’s appeal before his show at Atlanta’s Tabernacle Friday (March 18). He is a technically skilled rapper, who is a master of rhymes. Logic is inoffensive and well-produced. He is part of a category of rappers of whom J. Cole embodies the best case success scenario. Logic is smart, conscious, talented, but without much of a persona outside the music. Logic’s good energy on stage quickly, gave his fans instant gratification. The wavy vibes were through the roof.  On another note, security was really tight and rude! They were pushy and some took their position of authority to serious. The bartenders were amazing and filled with great energy- needless to say the drinks were excellent too.

In his studio recordings, Logic’s words and flow are the most impressive thing and supposed to be the focus. But live, that did not always translate. He can rap fast, yes, but in person it is difficult to pick out more than a word or two here and there, and it often sounded like he was spitting rhythmic gibberish.  All in all, Logic gave a great energetic performance. He expressed his love for Atlanta and almost shed tears when the fans knew all of the lyrics. The night was filled with drunk young people, great vibes, and great music.

Logic was joined onstage by one DJ and one photographer, plus an LED screen that projected images of neighborhood streets and figures like Muhammad Ali and Steve Jobs, adding a bit of atmosphere. He performed fans’ favorites like “City of Stars,” “Fade Away” and “Upgraded”. Logic also surprised his fans with a guest appearance rapper Big Lenbo. While Logic effortlessly mimics the great flows of the ’90s, it’s Big Lenbo’s brash delivery that weaves it together. Channelling early Kanye West, the album hits turbulence with the hip-hop breakup story, “City of Stars,” but quickly smoothes back out with the Jesse Boykins III-driven “Paradise.”

A few months after the release of his second album, “The Incredible True Story” , Logic is prepared to embark on his new tour in 2016. Last week, the Maryland rap poet released an interesting one-off track called “Tree of Life” features Slug (of Atmosphere) and the always eloquent Killer Mike.

The piano-themed song,  produced by Top Dawg Entertainment’s  producer Tae Beast, features the rap trifecta reflecting on the good and bad of hip-hop in their respective lives using the tree as their metaphor.

Logic starts off the song saying that he read something from Atmosphere in which they spoke about music we love and hate. He then raps about how different types of music connects with people in certain ways and just because it’s different doesn’t mean it’s inferior.

“We all from the same tree but your leaves degraded / Judging the different branches in music that elevated / Just cause it’s further from the roots don’t mean that you should hate it / Cause there’s a time and place for everything that’s been created” he raps.

Atmosphere continues to build on theme, suggest that hip-hop was made for everybody and not for a particular demographic. “My skin looks like bark / They used to do it out in the park / Pretend to defend or neglect to protect,” he says.

After selling an incredible 125,000 copies of his sophomore project, The Incredible Story, Logic has announced that he will be going on a world tour to promote the project.

The Maryland native went on his Twitter account to make the announcement, tweeting, “Very excited to announce #TheIncredibleWorldTour. Tickets on sale this Friday! (Dec. 4)”.

The tour, which begins on February 2nd, kicks off in Vancouver, B.C. and includes stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and more. International stops include shows in the U.K., Denmark, Czech Republic and Sweden; among other dates. The tour concludes on May 10th in Stockholm, Sweden.

“The Incredible World Tour” will serve as a gold medal for Logic, who shocked many of his naysayers with his ability to make noise on the Billboard charts with both his 2014 debut album, Under Pressure, and his latest project, The Incredible Story.

His second album has been a topic of discussion among rap aficionados with much of the feedback being positive. The 25-year-old rhymer proves to be ahead of the game with his tour announcement and is ready to have an eventful 2016.

Logic‘s debut album Under Pressure may have set standards, however the newly announced Sophomore LP is likely to take the lead. Carrying the title The Incredible True Story, we expect this production to definitely live up to its name.

We may have been awaiting a concrete project for quite some time now, but Logic certainly makes the anticipation worthwhile. Having already gained the attention of fans, and of course the respect of many artists, this next move will only increase numbers.
