Cups of liquor. Wild-childs crowding the stage. This was the scene at the Juicy J concert last night at Terminal 5. As we were all patiently waiting for the show to start, the lights dimmed suddenly. Over the loud speakers, Juicy’s Memphis drawl emerged. The crowd went wild.

Juicy isn’t new to the stage or the pandemonium that awaits him every time he gets up there. After shouting out NYC, he smoothly transitioned into his first song of the night, “Holy Ghost,” a new track that features Lil Bibby. The crowd shouted along as they twerked, two stepped and jumped up and down. We all knew it was about to be a great night.

Juicy performed a slew of tracks that included “Bandz A Make Her Dance,” “You Don’t Know,” “Word On The Town” and many more. But his shining moment was when he performed snippets of his tracks with Three 6 Mafia. When “Sippin’ On Some Syrup” dropped, the crowd absolutely lost it; they couldn’t get enough of the throwback hits. As the songs kept rolling, more blunts got lit, the liquor flowed, and the crowd stayed trippy.

The OG rapper couldn’t have hit NYC at a better time. With the summer finally coming ablaze, Juicy J was the gas needed to keep the fire burning. First, it’s his signature hairstyle, then it’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses.” Vic‘s verse on the track is one of the best of the entire tape, and still stands as perhaps his highest-profile moment: a perfect prelude to tonight’s grand entrance. Sporting a metallic jacket that matched the large disco ball in the middle of Terminal 5, Vic hops on stage. The audience, composed of hip-hop heads and ravers, immediately vibes along with the Savemoney artist’s incredible energy. Vic leads off with the warm and quick-footed “Lovely Day,” striking a pose with each of the opening chords’ distinct stabs, and follows that with “Orange Soda.” Before he gets to performing the more even tempo-ed second track, Vic runs to the front of the stage, arm in the air, and asks the crowd: “Any smokers in the house?” Everyone starts chanting with him: “Pack the bong, pack the bong, pack the bong, pack it.” Vic really shows off his singing voice here, too, and not just during the hook. He really impresses the crowd each time he punctuates his lines with a soulful little “Oo-ooh.”

Later in “Orange Soda,” Vic plays around with his delivery, slowing down to talk in between his lines as the beat cuts out from under him. “They made list about Chicago rappers and they skipped me” he talk-raps, briefly ranting before following up with the bar’s second half: “Maybe because I’m so much more.” Vic delivers the message loud and clear. Stefan and the MC were clearly well rehearsed–all of the DJ’s cuts were in perfect sync with Vic‘s elastic play on the initial rhythms.

To switch things up a bit, Vic performs two new tracks and turns the moment into something of a variety show. See for yourself:

Vic tells the crowd that the world is hearing “Feel That” for the first time tonight at Terminal 5. “I think I’m legend in the making, I feel that…She’s on the phone, she wants to fuck me and I feel that,” Vic spits. His delivery is a bit off; he’s almost drooling his words. “Feel That” does not have the complex bars that we are accustomed to hearing with Vic, but the knocking beat is able to carry the track. The audience is then graced with a second new song–this one’s far more frantic. Everyone gets hyped up. After bringing the pit of bodies in front of him to a ferocious, frenetic peak, Vic leaves the stage. The crowd wants more, but that’s all the time he has for the night.

Vic Mensa was somehow able to inject a 30minute opening gig with the theatrics and variety of a full headline show. He was an incredible live-performer. It was easy to feel years of training he received while touring with Kids These Days fueling his naturally captivating presence. Vic was a spectacle, and he still managed to connect with the audience on a personal level even jumping down into the mosh pit that concluded the show and rocking out with fans face to face, shoulder to sweaty shoulder. The Chicago rapper’s love for music and for putting on a good show was palpable: if you have money for one concert, you won’t be disappointed choosing Vic.

Three weeks into Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All’s WOLF GANG National Tour and frontman Tyler, the Creator said the unexpected. “I’m not gonna lie, I’m exhausted as fuck. Bare with me.” For the controversial, provocative and foul-mouthed Tyler, to have him admit his dwindling energy was one small thing. Compared to watching the ringleader and Hodgy Beats jump from the second floor balcony into a sea of fans, then continue with stage dives and aggressive-fueled dancing afterwards was another.

Tyler may be exhausted at this point, but Odd Future shows are more than these displays of youthful enthusiasm. It has turned into a massive cult following, reaching mostly rebellious teenagers who will do anything in order to be recognized as part of the L.A. crew. Take for instance, a kid who wore a panda mask jumping from the same place Tyler and Hodgy did. Their response? They pointed and laughed.

The announcement of Odd Future’s fourth show at Terminal 5 in New York City has been sold out, offering proof of their rising starpower. This dark and hallow venue was filled with a bunch of eager kids ready to kill people, burn shit and fuck school. Thankfully, they didn’t do this in the literal sense, but it was more or less in the same vein. To watch the crowd chanting “Wolf Gang,” pushing themselves to the point of shoulder-to-shoulder and growing restless by screaming “Start the show” before they took the stage drives this point about Odd Future: The competition that night was slim for another collective living in the moment.

Since Odd Future’s first show in L.A., the hype machine has grown into their performances capturing the same feeling of a punk rock show. Riotous records like MellowHype’s “64,” a sub-group that features the lyrical flurry of Hodgy Beats and Tyler’s “Translyvania,” were muddled with distortions as they shouted their lyrics. Together with the heavy output of a booming bassline through the speakers, the experience wasn’t judged by the quality of sound. It was just more ammunition for the crowd to wildly jump, furiously head bang, form circle pits, crowd surf and direct middle fingers to the nearest person.

Odd Future was at its best when they played their menacing tracks. Of course, their interruptions between songs also gave a small glimpse of just how intimate this crew really was. Inside jokes, grew into more inside jokes. Goofy banter between the crew always consisted of at least one comedic jab at Jasper Dolphin. A kid swinging a lightersaber at everyone and stoner Domo Genesis expressing his love for marijuana had all come with the ticket price. Every member of Odd Future had a microphone and all were vying for attention. But Mike G, who was the group’s secret weapon, stood out with his laid back flow. His smooth raps shined on “Everything That’s Yours” and “A Million and One Answers,” serving as slowed down break amidst all the chaos.

Even though Odd Future has their hype kicked into overdrive, it doesn’t stop Tyler’s on-stage antics from being entertaining. Out of all of his members, he still possesses the power to command a crowd on his own. “Yonkers” off his second album Goblin, which shot him to Internet stardom, was reluctantly performed. “I fucking hate this song,” he said. Despite his words of disapproval, he performed the song just for Mike G. Another performance was “Bastard,” in which he did his signature moves (eyes rolled back, etc.) with every unsettling rhyme.

While Odd Future did its best to keep the spirit of Earl Sweatshirt alive, its songs like their mash-up of MellowHype’s “F666 The Police” that faded into “Bitch Suck Dick,” which ratcheted the intensity of the crowd. Past Earl songs (“Orange Juice” and “Drop”) did the same, but it didn’t match the evening’s last song, “Radicals.” With a final burst of energy from Odd Future and their affiliates – which included more stage dives from everyone — left the audience reeling.

As Tyler and Co. left NYC to shouts of “Encore show,” everyone eventually marched outside into the rainy weather. Condensed in barricades to prevent them from spilling onto the streets, the sounds of chatter about the show meant the last thing on their mind was exhaustion.
