For the past year or so, Las Vegas resident Teej has been building quite the following. Hailing from San Diego, the rapper has a unique style that at times reminds you of KYLE, while sometimes he sounds like the next evolutionary step of Childish Gambino’s self-aware, quirky and marketable sound. Either way, the man makes quality music & he taps back in with perhaps his best song to date, “Aaliyah.”

Produced by buzzing beatmaker Will Steller, “Aaliyah” is a fun, bouncy track that sees Will & Teej utilizing some of their best qualities as artists. While Steller creates tailor made production for Teej’s sound with friendly synths and catchy drum breaks, the latter uses the outfit to completely stunt. Known to be a bit more humble in his lyrics — save a few hidden bars here and there — Teej takes this opportunity to acknowledge his impending rise to stardom.

Personally, one of my favorite parts of Hip-Hop are rollouts. Call me a nerd, geek or whatever, but I love watching artists come up with wildly creative schemes to promote their album’s release authentically. Despite being independent, Las Vegas native Teej handled the release of his debut album, Spotlight as if it were a major release, using billboards, city-wide kickball games & of course fullproof singles to promote it’s release & despite all of the hype, it did not disappoint.

Clocking in at a solid 12 tracks, Spotlight is a melodically driven, self reflective project that brings all of Teej’s intangible qualities together that drive his success. Songs like, “Japan” & the Chop 808 assisted, “Swing on By” are sure-fire hits while tracks like, “Down For It” showcase his strong flow & surprisingly good voice.

Being a fan of Teej’s since the 2017 release of, “Spotlight” — which serves as a perfectly placed intro to brings the listener to nostalgia — it’s encouraging to see his development into somebody who can depend on his songwriting to carry the weight of a song as opposed to resorting to the old melodic pop tricks.

With the album already reaching numbers on the streaming services, I suggest you get familiar with Teej sooner rather than later. Listen below.

Last year, we introduced you guys to a a fresh talent by the name of Teej. The North Carolina native had blown us away with the potential he showcased on his breakthrough single, “Spotlight” & we’ve been championing his come up ever since, prepping the masses for when his promise turned into a guarantee.

Gathering steam for his upcoming debut album, Spotlight, Teej taps common collaborator Itsrayiguess for the sure-to-be smash, “Japan (Runaway)” which highlights Teej reaching deep into his bag and pulling out all the tricks. Whether it’s the surprising vocal performance, the home run melodies or his unquestionable chemistry with Ray — *prayer hand emoji* for more records from these two — Teej shows that he’s completely ready for the spotlight.

Throughout the history of time, debates have been had on just how we as humans have come to be on this Earth. Religion, science & everything in between have done their best to try and give accurate hypotheses, but at the end of the day, it’s all debatable. One thing that isn’t, is the power that was given to females who carry a special…. aquatic treasure on their person. If you ask Las Vegas  singer/rapper Teej on his new single, “Aquafina,” it damn near might be heaven.

Boasting a relatively strong regional buzz as an unreleased track performed at shows, “Aquafina” sees Teej solidly put together all of the flashes he showed on his previous releases, just in time for album mode. With a catchy cadence that calls for a fun chorus, Teej also carries through the verse for just the right amount of time, just as the chorus starts ringing in your head again.

We caught up with the 20-year-old to talk about his new single, upcoming debut album and a little more. Check it out below.

RESPECT. Magazine: Update your fans with what’s going on with Teej.

Teej: I’m finishing up the album, trying to make sure my debut is something special. Not just a, “here and now thing” You know?

RESPECT.: When is the album coming exactly?

Teej: June 29th! I’ll finally be 21 so everyone in the city can stop picking at me that I have to sneak in to my own shows, haha.

RESPECT.: Is this an official single from the album?

Teej: Yes, this is the first single of one more to come off the album.

RESPECT.: When can we see Teej on tour?

Teej: Later this year actually! With a brand new friend of mine…

When it comes to promoting a project, the more attention the better. Sometimes, artists opt for the fake marriages and exploitive publicities, others try to flood the market with hot music. Sin City rep Teej decides to go with the latter and drops off two new vibrant singles in, “Drama Queen” and the Chop 808 assisted, “Swing On By.”

Sticking the the nostalgic, 90’s vibe that helped his previous hit, “Spotlight” Teej and Chop channel their inner Bel Biv Devoe with quirky rhymes and singalong cadences that make It a true candidate for not only online success, but also radio considering that the song is mostly clean. On, “Drama Queen,” Teej decides to slow It down a bit more and focus in on the adult crowd, talking to an estranged lover about making everything all better, and being a bit more rational.

With his project set to release in the near future, be sure to stop sleeping on the Vegas songwriter. And with, “Swing On By” already approaching 8K plays in it’s first week, it’s better to do so now rather than later. Check out, “Swing On By” below, and listen to “Drama Queen” here.

In case you haven’t heard, or you’ve been doing your best to ignore it; grooves are back in style. With the recent influx of groovy Hip-Hop influenced artists like Anderson .Paak, Masego, Goldlink and more; funky drum kicks and high pitched guitar solos are back on top. One beneficiary of the shift has been Las Vegas native Teej, who checks into the RESPECT. Mag pages for the first time with his melodic new track, “Spotlight.”

Set to the tone of wavy synths and synchronized drum patterns, Teej absolutely floats over the giddy track, which is themed about a man professing his love for a woman. With Teej’s effortless way of jumping between rapper and singer — both of which he does well — it’s not hard to see him climbing up the charts sooner, rather than later.
