]]> As you probably know, the lack of African-American nominees caused a huge uproar around this year’s Academy Awards. On twitter the hashtag “#OscarsSoWhite” took on a life of its own while also adding fuel to the racial fire brewing in Hollywood. The racial tension reached an all-time high when almost all of the black actors and actresses decided to boycott the event. Ironically, Chris Rock hosted the event and did the right thing by addressing the situation in his highly anticipated opening monologue. His speech was short extremely powerful, he sent a couple of shots out but only to get his point across!

Somehow, regardless of all the hype surrounding the event, ABC reported a 7 year low in ratings for the awards show. 34.3 million viewers may be a lot for other TV stations but I’m sure ABC had much higher expectations. Overall the show traveled at a decent pace, there were no long speeches or anything that would slow the tempo.

The big winner of the night was Mad Max: Fury Road; an amazing movie that deserved to win all 6 awards!  Spotlight was the biggest surprise of the night winning the Best Picture Award over the remarkable film The Revenant and another award for Best Screenplay.

Nearly everyone thought Sylvester Stallone was going to win the award for Best Supporting Actor but Mark Rylance walked away with it for his role in Bridge of Spies. The Oscar for Best Actor in a leading role went to Leonardo DiCaprio as most people assumed; it is his first one but I’m sure it’s far from his last! On the female side, Brie Larson won Best Actress in a leading role while Alicia Vikander snatched the award for Best Supporting Actress. Hopefully next year we can have all of the actors we love in attendance!
