Nancy Lieberman is a trendsetter in basketball. Lieberman has worked hard amongst both men and women in basketball on the court and in coaching for over 20 years.

Currently an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, she’s always defied odds. While in high school as a junior, Lieberman represented the U.S. at the Pan American Games in 1975.

She’d make history afterward when she made the Olympic team and earned a silver medal. History was made then when she became the youngest basketball medal winner in the history of the Olympics.

In between then and now, Coach Lieberman played on the U.S. Women’s National Team, the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury, was named to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and was the president of the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Like Lieberman, San Antonio Spurs assistant coach, Becky Hammon is also a trendsetter in sports. A sixteen year WNBA vet, Hammon signed with the New York Liberty as an undrafted free agent in 1999 and played for New York until 2006.

“My journey as a basketball player and how the fans have always embraced me even when I was the last person on the bench; I have had to work my way up each year with the Liberty,” Becky Hammon told me.

“Nothing came easy to me.”

During her stint with the Liberty, the 5’6 guard helped lead the franchise to three WNBA Finals appearances. She retired from basketball in 2014 as a member of the San Antonio Stars. In the summer of 2015, Hammon coached the San Antonio Spurs’ summer league team to a championship in Las Vegas.

“I think that her story herself is very inspiring for not only women but it’s that underdog story,” retired WNBA player Swin Cash told me.

“She came into a situation where she had to fight her way to get everything she has.”

Lieberman is elated that both she and Lieberman bore over the years as it relates to equality. “It’s what we do,” Nancy Lieberman told me on Scoop B Radio,

“I mean I’ve been coaching for 22 years now and everything I’ve done in my life I’ve been around guys whether it was playing for Pat Riley and the Lakers in their summer league or playing for the Jazz in ’86. I was head coach of the Dallas Mavericks D-League team five years ago, the Texas Legends. So this is just normal for me. However, the more people see Becky and myself the more it becomes normal to everybody else this is just what we do and we’re comfortable doing it.”

Recently retired after a fifteen year WNBA career, Swin Cash is on to the next project.

Chances are, she’ll be successful and her resume supports it. She’s been a winner on every level: three WNBA Championships, two NCAA National Championships and two Olympic gold medals.

Cash credits it to leadership and her hometown, Mckeesport, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh. “You lead all of the people around you,” Cash told me on today’s episode of Scoop B Radio.

Check Out Swin Cash and CBS’s Brandon Robinson on Scoop B Radio

“Sometimes being a leader doesn’t mean that you are the vocal leader, you’re the hardest worker. It’s about how you make the people around you better. That’s how I’ve always looked at leadership. It’s something that’s always stayed with me.”

So what’s next for Cash? Hey TV producers, casting directors and anyone else, here’s what you need to do to get Swin Cash on your network.

“I think the ability to be myself,” said Cash. “Understanding that I would like the opportunity to continue to grow. I love direction; I’m very critical of myself so I want to have the ability to grow and to not be put into a box. I think sometimes you look at a female covering male sports and sometimes people get put into a box and I still need someone to understand that I was not born to be put into a box. So giving me that ability to really grow and not look at me as just a female analyst, but look at me as just an analyst is what I would probably want. And also I’m not looking to just do sports. I’m looking to cross over and to be able to host and do entertainment and do other things. So I want to spread my wings and I’m just looking for the right people to open those doors and allow me to do that.”

Good Morning America with Robin Roberts and Michael Strahan would be a good fit, maybe. Right Swin?

“Well I love Robin [Roberts] and I love Michael [Strahan] and both of them have been very instrumental in my groove on the television side,” she said. “They’ve opened up their arms in allowing me to even shadow them and see what it’s like to be part of that television grind. So, hopefully one day.”

The second pick in the 2002 WNBA draft, Cash finished her career averaging 10.7 points per game playing for the Detroit Shock, Seattle Storm, Chicago Sky, Atlanta Dream and the New York Liberty. This past summer she was listed in the WNBA’s Top 20, a list culminated to honor the league’s top players in it’s now 20 year existence. That list also includes Seimone Augustus, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Maya Moore, Candace Parker, Cappie Pondexter, Diana Taurasi, Lindsay Whalen, Cynthia Cooper, Yolanda Griffith, Becky Hammon, Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, Deanna Nolan, Ticha Penicheiro, Katie Smith, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson and Teresa Weatherspoon.
