Radio host and influencer Dede McGuire, has stamped her legacy in the radio industry through her Dede In The Morning show. As one of the only black female nationally syndicated radio hosts, she is using her platform to directly impact the African American and Dallas community. Her recent appearance on the Steve Harvey Show, is one of the many reasons why she is one of Dallas’ most notable public figures.

I had the pleasure of catching up with this trailblazer for a quick interview below. Dede candidly discussed The DeDe McGuire Foundation, breaking barriers and being on top.

Respect: What is the most rewarding thing about being a radio ?

Dede: The ability to help people, our community and many non profit oganizations through exposure, monetary donations and information (oh, and the paycheck! Ha)

Respect: In what ways have you defied the odds as an African American woman in the entertainment business?

Dede: I believe I defied the odds by my journey from radio market #141 (Killeen, TX) to becoming a major market talent. Having worked in five of the top ten cities in the country is a huge accomplishment, but it’s staying there that can prove difficult. ( I either worked or broadcasted through syndication in the following markets 1 (New York),  3 (Chicago), 5 (Dallas), 6 (Houston) and 9 (Philadelphia).

I also believe by my longevity in the business (over 20 years) and my current position as the host of my own nationally syndicated morning show is not what many expected and not many can do consistently and successfully.

Respect: I understand that you are working on several entrepreneurial projects, can you expound upon them?

Dede: I am working on my media company along with the recent purchases of several franchises in our area. I’ve just recently joined a female investment club and want to next explore online retail opportunities.

Respect: As a public figure and notable influencer in Dallas, how have you used your talented to impact the culture around you?

Dede: As a woman I am very passionate about navigating women through this delicate #metoo movement. I want to celebrate our strength and contributions as mothers, daughters, wives, bosses etc. This is why I launched The DeDe McGuire Foundation which heavily focuses on scholarships for low-income women whose college education was interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances With a chance to go back and obtain a degree.

I also host my annual charity women’s luncheon which benefits my foundation as well as I lead the Dallas Women’s March every year and have taken a very public stance against domestic violence. I use my show as a vehicle for those survivors of domestic violence to tell their stories. I sit on the Board of Directors for an organization here now and every year hold a charity Bowl-a-Thon to raise funds for a shelter.

Recently, gun violence in our community as well as in the Hip Hop world, has been in the news at an all time high. The drug and gun culture is so prevalent in our country period, that I recently asked my boss to stop the music on the station and talk about it.

We shut the music off for two hours and spoke with ex gang members, criminal judges, Pastors, Lawyers and concerned listeners to address how we can fix the problem. It was one of the best programs I’ve done on radio in recent years.

Respect: What was your experience like being on the Steve Harvey Show?

Dede: First I am so proud of Steve Harvey. To watch his career journey and see where he is at today is inspiration for us all! I will tell you though, doing the show was not what I expected. It moved faster than I thought, the mics were projected out towards the audience so when I spoke I thought no one could hear me because I swear I COULDN’T HEAR ME!

It was like I was having an out of body experience! I was on the “Straight Talk” segment and it was me along with two other ladies and we were supposed to debate. Well, I don’t debate as much anymore because as my position of the “HOST” of a show I mediate and listen more now, than aggressively giving a comment.

Also as the host of my own show, I get the right of way and if I want to give my opinion I just give it. I found out that day that I have clearly graduated to giving people opportunities to respond and respecting their opinion, because I failed miserably at jumping in and talking over the other guests. Ha!

Respect: How important it is for you to give back to your community?

Dede: It’s very important. I feel the black community has always looked for the church and black radio for help. It’s been this way for a long time and I’m very aware of my role as a community leader now.

I have been truly Blessed and and learned a long time ago that you can’t just open your hand to receive, you must first open it to give. That’s why I’m expanding my DeDe McGuire Foundation this year to include more help with daycare, fun do for start up black businesses and more.

Respect: What message would you send to aspiring millennials wanting to have a career in radio?

Dede: I think millennials have the tendency to move fast or want things to move faster than they should. There is a process to everything, so I would advise them to slow down and enjoy the moment. Learn from their elders, find a mentor and do their best to stand out.

As she continues to break barriers and use her voice to cultivate change, Dede McGuire wants the world to know that she has only just begun!

Meet Clarence Jones.

Jones is the engine behind making quality suits for many of the participants in the NBA and NFL drafts.

Owner of Memphis, Tennessee-based  CJ Custom Clothiers, Jones has been in the clothing business since ’94.

Jones’ signature service warrants repeat customers.

Some of his high profile clients have included NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal, comedian Steve Harvey, Wake Forest men’s basketball coach Danny Manning, retired NBA champ Gary Payton, NBA legend Tim Hardaway, comedian D.L. Hughley and Denver Nuggets forward Mason Plumlee.

Jones credits fashion icon Barbara Bates for giving him his first start when he made custom shirts for Steve Harvey, Cedric The Entertainer, D.L. Hughley and the late Bernie Mac while they were on tour for the iconic Original Kings of Comedy.

“I didn’t do that kind of work, so it was easy for me to send him down that road and I connected some dots,” Barbara Bates told me by phone.

“What happened was Barbara Bates was actually the person who was making clothes for Steve Harvey when he was at the Apollo and I told her that I made suits,” Clarence Jones told me on Scoop B Radio.

“She told me that she would give me an opportunity to make shirts for some of her people so Steve’s Manager, the great Juan Hull who is from Dallas, Texas gave me some opportunities to work with him.”

Added Jones:

“He’s the one who introduced me to Steve Harvey and Steve in turn put me in contact with Cedric The Entertainer and Cedric’s manager Eric Rhone hooked me up with D.L. Hughley.”

D.L. Hughley counts Jones as a friend and still utilizes his services. “He guides clients from wearing gaudy stuff even though they want to,” Hughley told me.

“He’s a throwback and believes the customer is always right—we’ve lost that in business today.”

Texas A&M’s Josh Reynolds will embark on a new journey with the NFL Draft slated for tomorrow. The dude goes from not even being able to get a scholarship offer to hitting the draft. Last season, he led the SEC with 1,039 yards and was tied with the conference with touchdowns with 12.

In between the grueling travel schedule of workouts, I sat down with Reynolds and talked about Peyton Manning being his dream QB to throw him a touchdown pass and the difference between dressing for the club and dressing for church!

T.I. is definitely one of Hip Hop’s most outspoken artists, so when he sent a message to warn minorities in the entertainment industry of “Willie Lynch” agenda-people listened.

After penning published open letters to both Donald Trump and President Obama, T.I. created three video messages via his Instagram to offer insight to the world and minorities in the entertainment industry on why they should not be taking meetings with President-elect Donald Trump.

In the videos,  the Grammy award winning emcee breaks down why Kanye West and Steve Harvey‘s meetings with Trump are detrimental to the black community as a whole and why he feels they were chosen.

“Trump knew that young people were against him, so who does he get to appeal to them-Kanye West. Why? Not because they buy his shoes or listen to his music, but to sway the young people who are against Trump that he’s ‘not that bad.'”

But T.I. didn’t stop there, he then went on to speak to Steve Harvey and Rev. Martin Luther King III letting them know they should “know better.”

“Steve Harvey you should know better and Rev. King he called you in on your daddy’s birthday, you should know better than that. Willie Lynch, read on it.”

The video series comes three days after T.I. penned his own letter to the President-elect, which served as the second letter in a series of open letters addressing social issues.

In the letter T.I., which appears on RollingStone.com, wrote that he wants the letter to serve as an opportunity to share “what many of us would like you to see” during Trump’s presidency.

“Should it ever at times seem as though we are against you, I assure you it’s a result of you defining yourself as the representative for those who are and who always have been against us,” he wrote.“The deck has always been stacked against us in this country. With every generation, there have been strategic steps taken to oppress, imprison and control US. All we’ve ever wanted was equality and empathy as the historically disenfranchised citizens that we are, in a nation that we’ve contributed to just as much as anyone else who calls America their home.”

T.I. celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a rather less than celebratory manner yesterday.

Recently, the Atlanta hip-hop heavyweight has made headlines due to his marital woes with wife Tameka “Tiny” Cottle. However, Tip gravitated himself to the center of controversy yet again when he took shots at Black celebrities taking meetings with president-elect Donald Trump.

A few weeks prior to T.I.’s Instagram rant, pictures of Kanye West meeting with Trump hit the Internet. While no clear-cut answer has been provided as to why West and Trump shared a meeting in Trump Tower, T.I. used this as a focal point in his IG rants. He made it clear fans of West should remain skeptical behind these so-called meetings.

“There’s a strategic plan that people are trying to make you a part of, okay? So do not accept any invitation to have any meeting. You being there, being seen with them, taking pictures and smiling and being positive may seem positive to you, but there’s a hidden agenda, man,” T.I. explains in part one of this three-part IG video rant.

It is clear Tip respects West as a man and as an artist; however, he concludes Kanye’s invitation to meet with Trump as a ploy to attract a younger demographic. Steve Harvey was the next one on T.I.’s radar.

According to T.I., Steve Harvey is the main representative for all black women, which is why they would be prone to falling in line with Harvey meeting Trump in Trump Tower the same way Kanye previously did.

In true T.I. fashion, he finished the last clip simply asking West the blazing question: “Kanye, what the fuck you doing, man?”

It’s the night of the Toni Braxton show in Atlanta, the last show her sisters will be with her on.  She surprises the crowd on Birdman‘s arm.  O-M-G!  It’s such a big deal because it had been rumored that the two have been “dating.”  Trina Braxton and Towanda Braxton have something up their sleeves as well for Toni.  She is the First Lady of LaFace and of Atlanta, the city officials and the family join on stage.  The city of Atlanta recognize Toni for her work and efforts she has put in and also declares it, ‘Toni Braxton Day’ in the city!  Her sisters and Evelyn Braxton (Mommy) all console her on stage with happy tears about the moment, but she will miss her sisters too.

Toni invites everyone back for a special private catered ‘thank you’ dinner by celebrity chef, Art Smith.  He says, “Party or Go Home!” Shouts to Trina.  Tamar Braxton announces that today was an awesome day and she has a new talk show partnering with Steve Harvey (Clink clink clink).  OPA!  The table talk was Trina twerk twirling on stage.  Traci Braxton‘s liver wants some water after cocktails and Birdman gave her a cup of G-T-V!  Tamar begs to differ that you aren’t supposed to get cups from rappers as Toni defends his legacy.  The question of the hour is, “What’s the T with you a B?”  Toni defends their friendship of 14 years and she calls him “B.”  They always had love for each other, but what’s going on?  Tamar asks while smacking on chicken, “Is that your man?”  She answers, “We don’t know, we’re friends maybe.”  He is more than what Tamar keeps saying, a rapper; Toni said to pay the man his respect.  Trina understands while Birdman enters the room.  He seems comfortable crashing dinner.  Tamar has questions as Toni asks not to antagonize the man.  She exits holding his hand, “We’ll see you guys later!”

Towanda, Tamar, and Mommy go shopping and Tamar sees sale signs.  Mommy is walking in a fashion show that Towanda is hosting.  Tamar and Towanda demonstrate the “walk.”  It’s on Mommy’s bucket list, but she can’t look like she is kicking buckets going down the runway, according to Tamar.  Towanda has an accident on herself while cracking up at Mommy in heels and Tamar.

In L.A., Gabe and Trina meet with her therapist to hash things out for closure on their divorce and civilness for the boys.  Trina is back in Atlanta riding with Towanda and discusses the last talk they had with Tamar and the meeting with Gabe and the counselor.  Towanda states fact to Trina about Gabe, his love for her, and his motives.  Trina is meeting with him again, but she is not telling.  “Gasterozation” is apart of life, but Towanda is not here for that.

In preparation for the fashion show, Towanda is trying to memorize her script while Mommy is there if she needs any help.  Toni, Trina, and Tamar arrive.  Mommy knows she has it like that so she is excited to show off what she is working with.  Just purr like a kitten.  Tamar wants to eat her Chick-fil-a from her purse while watching Mommy down the runway.  She is not ashamed in Atlanta.  She has her Chanel bag with waffle fries and a strawberry milkshake by Toni’s feet.  When they stand to applaud it falls all over her shoes.  Mommy had the strut and walk with a switch; she might catch her someone walking like that.

Back in L.A., Gabe is still in town for work and Trina is back and she wants to continue the conversation they started so they meet for some eats.
