The NBA Season

While the NBA was looking forward to the NBA Finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers, there was a lot of action around the league. Starting with the Golden State Warriors’ record breaking year, the league was placed in awe by the amazing gameplay of the team. With Stephen Curry leading the league in scoring once again and winning his second MVP, he showed the league why he is one of the elite point guards in the NBA. The Warriors also broke multiple records for individual players and as a team. However, their most impressive record they broke was the most wins in a single NBA season with 73 wins. With this record broken, the NBA planned on seeing the team win back to back NBA championships. As they stormed through the playoffs, in the Western Conference finals, they ran into issues facing Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Oklahoma City Thunder had a 3-1 lead over the Golden State Warriors. However, the Warriors regained confidence and defeated the Thunder in the next 3 games. With these wins, the Warriors faced the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals once again. The Golden State Warriors had a 3-1 lead as well. But due to suspicious calls, ejections, and the great play of LeBron James, the Cavaliers became the first team to come back from a 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals to win. This championship gives the Cleveland Cavaliers their first franchise championship.

Kevin Durant To Golden State

After Kevin Durant lost to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, his contract expired making him a free agent. Looking at the many teams he could have joined, no one believed that he would have joined the Golden State Warriors. Stephen A. Smith describes this move as “The weakest move by a superstar”. I tend to agree considering that Durant lost to Golden State in the Western Conference.

Chicago Cubs Win A World Series

The Chicago Cubs was subject to a drought without a World Series for 108 years. However, after coming back from a 3-1 lead over the Cleveland Indians, the Cubs finally won their third World Series. The World Series MVP went to Ben Zobrist. With the Chicago Clubs overcoming their drought, the current longest drought in the MLB belongs to the Cleveland Indians.

A costumed protester took to the field during the Lions-Bears game yesterday, wearing a gorilla suit with a shirt over it that read “All Lives Matter.”

Recently there has been a growing number of people at sporting events who have been peacefully protesting in a different direction, towards the “Black Lives Matter” movement. In these cases, starting with Colin Kapaernick and snowballing from there, both players and spectators had taken to kneeling during the national anthem to show solidarity for those who many believe have been subject to unnecessary violence and death at the hands of the police. Today’s protester, while not only going in a different direction of beliefs, also went in a different direction of showing what he felt. Rather than quietly kneeling, the video taken shows that he ran onto the field during a television timeout in the fourth quarter. He evaded capture from security for a few moments before falling and being buried under his pursuers.

While the man’s shirt read that “All Lives Matter”, it seems that perhaps attention might have mattered a bit more to him than his message, considering he took the time to get a costume. According to the Chicago Times, Bear players noticed the costumed man but not the shirt. Any political statement he may have been trying to make seems to have been far outweighed by the ridiculous way that he tried to present it. He has since been arrested for the disturbance. For anyone who missed the ESPYs, here are our Top Five moments.

1.End to Gun Violence Address by NBA players

The ESPYs opened with a very serious and heartfelt call to action by NBA players Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Chris Paul, and Carmelo Anthony demanding an end to police brutality and gun violence in the United States. The players urged their fellow athletes to educate themselves and be the change in their communities.

2. Arthur Ashe Award for Courage given to deceased Zaevion Dobson

December 2015, 15-year-old high school football player Zaevion Dobson was shot and killed by stray bullets while attempting to protect three young women. Dobson’s mother, Zenobia, accepted the award on behalf of her son expressing the stronger need for athletes to use their influence and power to affect change.

3. Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Womach, all recently retired athletes, receive Icon Award

After more than 10 years of service to their individual sports, Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Womach each won the Icon Award, which was presented by Justin Timberlake. Bryant, who had a 20 year NBA career, added some charisma and humor to the night when he gave his comedic acceptance speech.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers Win Best Team

Other than winning all three ESPY Awards that he was nominated for, James celebrated another victory with his team as they took home the Best Team Award after winning the NBA championship trophy just one month ago.

5.Chance the Rapper Honor The Original G.O.A.T. Muhammad Ali

Self Explanatory.

Though the ESPYs are not a fashion show, a lot of the ‘who’s who’ in sports came dressed to impress. RESPECT’S best dressed list includes:
