<p>This week in the international-street-art-sphere portraiture was the method of choice. Just for you, we&#8217;ve compiled the portraits that we found to be most striking. View them below.</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-aryz-is-back-for-the-galore-festival-2012/">Aryz</a></strong> (above) worked on a collaboration with <strong><a href="http://davidchoeama.com/" target="_blank">David Choe</a></strong> in <strong>L.A.</strong> You can clearly distinguish the American&#8217;s artist surrealistic style colliding with the <strong>Aryz</strong>&#8216;s creepy world.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://respect-mag.com/?attachment_id=60376" rel="attachment wp-att-60376"><img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="60376" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/05/street-art-best-of-the-week-the-art-of-portraiture/streetartnews_invader_london_star_wars-3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_invader_london_star_wars-3.jpg?fit=640%2C428&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,428" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="INVADER STARWARS " data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_invader_london_star_wars-3.jpg?fit=640%2C428&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_invader_london_star_wars-3.jpg?fit=640%2C428&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-60376 aligncenter" alt="INVADER STARWARS " src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_invader_london_star_wars-3.jpg?resize=640%2C428" width="640" height="428" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><strong><em>Invader</em></strong></p>
<p>Last time we heard from <a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-spiderman-invades-the-heart-of-paris/"><strong>Invader</strong></a> he was pasting a mosaic of Spider-man onto the Parisian landscape. The French artist now dropped a new work in <strong>London</strong> depicting another hero, <strong>Luke Skywalker, </strong>chilling out with his father, <strong>Darth Vader</strong>.</p>
<p><a href="http://respect-mag.com/?attachment_id=60380" rel="attachment wp-att-60380"><img decoding="async" data-attachment-id="60380" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/05/street-art-best-of-the-week-the-art-of-portraiture/streetartnews_benslow_mearone_sanfrancisco-jpg3/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_benslow_mearone_sanfrancisco.jpg3_.jpg?fit=640%2C255&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,255" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="benslowmearone" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_benslow_mearone_sanfrancisco.jpg3_.jpg?fit=640%2C255&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_benslow_mearone_sanfrancisco.jpg3_.jpg?fit=640%2C255&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-60380 aligncenter" alt="benslowmearone" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_benslow_mearone_sanfrancisco.jpg3_.jpg?resize=640%2C255" width="640" height="255" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><strong><em>Ben Slow &amp; Mear One</em></strong></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.slowbenart.com/" target="_blank">Ben Slow</a> </strong>and <a href="http://www.mearone.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Mear One</strong> </a>worked on a politically charged collaboration for the streets of <strong>San Francisco</strong>. The two street artists portrayed Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan in a light that acknowledges their shadier dealings.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://respect-mag.com/?attachment_id=60382" rel="attachment wp-att-60382"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="60382" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/05/street-art-best-of-the-week-the-art-of-portraiture/streetartnews_jacktml_germany-1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_jacktml_germany-1.jpg?fit=640%2C425&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,425" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="_jacktml_" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_jacktml_germany-1.jpg?fit=640%2C425&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_jacktml_germany-1.jpg?fit=640%2C425&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-60382 aligncenter" alt="_jacktml_" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_jacktml_germany-1.jpg?resize=640%2C425" width="640" height="425" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><strong><em>Jack TML</em></strong></p>
<p>The incredible Israeli artist <a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-jack-tmls-characters-floating-in-the-meaningless/"><strong>Jack TML</strong></a> was recently in <strong>Germany</strong> to paint an indoor piece somewhere in <strong>Munich</strong>. His figurative work is charged with feelings of distance and proximity.</p>

<p><strong>Aryz</strong>, prior to his collaboration with <strong>David Choe,</strong> worked on a gigantic mural in <strong>San Francisco</strong>. The Barcelona-based artist worked on merging the insides and outsides of his female character using his signature color pallet.</p>
<p><a href="http://respect-mag.com/?attachment_id=60386" rel="attachment wp-att-60386"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="60386" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/05/street-art-best-of-the-week-the-art-of-portraiture/streetartnews_stik_chichester-1122/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_stik_chichester-1122.jpg?fit=640%2C640&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,640" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="Stick" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_stik_chichester-1122.jpg?fit=640%2C640&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_stik_chichester-1122.jpg?fit=640%2C640&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-60386 aligncenter" alt="Stick" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/streetartnews_stik_chichester-1122.jpg?resize=640%2C640" width="640" height="640" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-stik-beauty-is-in-movement/"><strong>Stik</strong></a> is currently honoring the <a href="http://www.chicagoevents.com/event.cfm?eid=141">Chichester Street Art Festival</a>  alongside <a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-phlegm-run-the-art-of-balance/"><strong>Run &amp; Phlegm. </strong></a>Working with his minimalistic stick figures, the British artist produces a piece that creates movement through subtlety.</p>

He is reinventing street art by using an original method of &#8220;glass scratching,&#8221; inspired loosely by the recent economic crisis.&#8221;Where the crisis strikes, you will notice many shops that are either closed or empty. If you scratch the window slightly you will suddenly be able to see the inside of the shop. I find that quite poetic,  glass has something bautiful about it. Sometimes I like to do the opposite of that. I apply black paint on commercial spotlights and by scratching the paint off the spotlight, I allow light to pass through.&#8221; <a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-borondo-ghostly-figures/street-art-by-borondo-from-spain-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-59977"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="59977" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/05/street-art-borondo-ghostly-figures/street-art-by-borondo-from-spain-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Street-Art-by-Borondo-from-Spain-2.jpg?fit=940%2C1253&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="940,1253" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;3.2&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;D-LUX 3&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1343488420&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;6.3&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;100&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.01&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="BORONDO" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Street-Art-by-Borondo-from-Spain-2.jpg?fit=940%2C1253&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Street-Art-by-Borondo-from-Spain-2.jpg?fit=640%2C853&amp;ssl=1" class="wp-image-59977 aligncenter" alt="BORONDO" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Street-Art-by-Borondo-from-Spain-2.jpg?resize=752%2C1002" width="752" height="1002" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a><strong>Borondo</strong> appears to be a little bit of a wise guy, explaining how his technique has more than esthetic advantages: it is actually a great technique for avoiding the cops. On the innocent nature of his method, he quips, &#8220;Technically you are only erasing paint that is on a window.&#8221; In his work, <strong>Borondo</strong> focuses on &#8220;humans and their emotions.&#8221; He aims to create something far from the Pop Movement and its codes. He wants to create a dialogue with the environment, and for this dialogue to work he calls for discretion. His characters have a ghostly quality, they are present without being overbearing, and merging with their environment perfectly.<br />

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><em>Wall painted with Daaan and Sanne</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong><a href="http://skount-works.blogspot.com/"><em></em>Skount</a></strong>, a Spanish street artist, has  been living in <strong>Amsterdam</strong> since 2009. The incredible artist works with illustrations of characters based on various cultural images. His masked creations are often mysterious and inspired by mostly ancient and extinct cultures that he resurrects through paint.</p>
<p><a href="http://respect-mag.com/street-art-skount-alleviates-worries-about-the-economic-crisis/streetartnews_skount_greece-1/" rel="attachment wp-att-59530"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="59530" data-permalink="https://respect-mag.com/2013/04/street-art-skount-alleviates-worries-about-the-economic-crisis/streetartnews_skount_greece-1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/streetartnews_skount_greece-1.jpg?fit=640%2C426&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="640,426" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;}" data-image-title="Skount" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/streetartnews_skount_greece-1.jpg?fit=640%2C426&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/streetartnews_skount_greece-1.jpg?fit=640%2C426&amp;ssl=1" class="size-full wp-image-59530 aligncenter" alt="Skount" src="https://i0.wp.com/respect-mag.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/streetartnews_skount_greece-1.jpg?resize=640%2C426" width="640" height="426" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://skount-works.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Skount</a></strong> is currently in Greece where he just finished painting &#8220;Five Worry Dolls&#8221; (above.)  The dolls originate from Guatemala<strong>, </strong> where they are called &#8220;worry dolls.&#8221; They are targeted at worried people, as their name implies. If people are unable to sleep because they are worried they use the dolls to express their fear and place them under their pillow; they&#8217;re kind of like dream catchers. The Spanish artist painted this piece in response to the current economic struggles Greece is facing. A fear for their future is omnipresent and is undoubtedly making a lot of people restless.  In their case they do not need one doll under their pillow, but five! This piece is one of the subtlest and most powerful murals to respond to the ongoing European economic crisis. Take note.<br />

<p><strong>Spanish</strong> street artist <a href="http://vinzfeelfree.com/"><strong>Vinz</strong></a> is back. His sensual works recently hit <strong>Valencia</strong>, <strong>Spain</strong> for “<em>Market</em>.” The<strong> “Feel Free” project </strong>uses nudes and sex as a symbol of love and friendship.</p>

<p>The critique of <strong>consumerism</strong> in art has been overexplored. Here is an intresting reflection on the use of human bodies and sexuality in the advertising industry to sell products that rarely have much to do with the painted picture. The <strong>D&amp;G</strong> reference is reminiscent of the highly criticized <strong>D&amp;G</strong> ad setting a gang rape scene (below):</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://vinzfeelfree.com/">Vinz</a></strong>, a <strong>Spanish</strong> street artist, merges delirium and sensuality in his lively characters. The artist creates highly detailed collages of beaked women laying in the nude. The monochromatic bodies seem deceptive and used &#8211; deprived of color yet empowered by passion. The bird heads are vividly colored, every feather has its own movement.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;">He explains that his use of bird heads and nudity &#8220;is related to the iconography of various religions. Birds and naked people are extracted from the<strong> book of Genesis</strong> in the <strong>Bible</strong>. <strong>Mayas</strong>, <strong>Aztechs</strong>, <strong>Sumerians</strong> etc. talk about the figure of reptile as the animals which take control over us, like police in our world. And the frog appears in Apocalypse scenes and is responsible for Humanity disasters. This is why I use them to build men in suit characters.&#8221;</p>
