New York City is known for its random displays of entertainment and overall, forms of expression. The recent pop up street art gallery that took place in Soho was no different. Done by the same elusive artist who previously showed their work at Bloomingdale’s, Yule C. is back at it. This time around, the artist created pieces inspired by the designer brands they were shown at, Versace and Diane Von Furstenberg. SoHo’s Nike store at 21 Mercer St. welcomed the Olympic spirit with a #TeamUSA themed installation by acclaimed street artist Eric Haze. The collection of paintings and murals gives our broad stripes and bright stars a facelift by reconfiguring the American flag into individual monochromatic grids and pieces fit with iconic symbols of basketball and track and field. The murals celebrate the red, white, and blue by highlighting the traditional symmetry of straight lines, mixing them up with Haze’s fresh street design. Haze’s transformation of the Nike store from a haven of sports apparel to a tagger’s take on patriotism took two weeks to finish.

A small selection of lucky, loyal Nas fans who weathered yesterday’s unusual torrential downpour were treated to a free album release concert in New York City courtesy of the MLB Fan Cave. Even in the face of emergency weather reports, Nas delivered exactly what his fans expected: a grand slam performance.

While the venue was both cramped and crowded, the small, intimate setting allowed Nas to wild out at his own discretion, making the one-room cave feel as though it were ten times larger. Starting his set with “The Don” and ending with “One Mic,” Nas channeled the nasty to its fullest. New tracks off of Life is Good were brought out as well, leaving Nas emotional as he showcased songs from his new album for the fist time. “Bye Baby” struck a nerve especially. “This is probably the most important story on the album,” he said. Even those unfortunate enough to not get into the venue could feel Nas’s energy from the glass walls on West 4th. One fan remarked during the performance, “He looks so happy.” Nas couldn’t agree more. “That’s why I had to made this album,” he told the Fan Cave audience. “It had to have meaning.”

Unfortunately, Nas’s usual lyricism was slightly stunted during the show by censorship, as he was careful to stay clean for his PG-13 crowd. Of course, that certainly did not stop loyal fans from replacing deleted lyrics with their own explicit shouts on “The World Is Mine,” “Made You Look,” “Represent,” “Hip Hop Is Dead,” and other classics. The Morrison Hotel Gallery is a music photography gem. Founded in 2001 by Peter Blachley a former record company executive and music producer, Rich Horowitz a former independent record store owner and, perhaps most importantly, Henry Diltz a famed music photographer, The Morrison Hotel Gallery remains a must see for all music photography aficionados.

The gallery prides itself on focusing on the people behind the camera almost as much as those in front, “They most likely had no idea what they were creating or how timeless the image would become. Music photography elicits an emotional reaction that is unique to all of us. It is no more than one-second of life at the time it takes to click the shutter. But what is forever frozen is timeless, and that’s what draws us to the photographs. We as people can’t live forever, but it seems as though the images do.” The Morrison Gallery embodies the true spirit of music photography and gives us a closer, more meaningful look at the lives of artists we’ve come to revere.

The gallery has five locations, three in downtown NYC and one in California. Current exhibitions include: Dark Night of the Soul: An exhibit consisting of 50 photographs by David Lynch Music by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse; Curt Gunther, Beatles First North American Tour ’64, What’s up in The Bowery? and many more.
