New Music: Pro Era (A La $ole, Dessy Hinds & CJ Fly) – “Hail Razor”

Pro Era and Scion AV are teaming up for a new EP titled The Shift. “Hail Razor” is the second offering off the EP, and is produced by Backpack. A La $ole, Dessy Hinds, and CJ Fly join forces on the track delivering hot bars over the piercing beat. The cypher-style record forgoes a hook and instead opts to focus on the verses. The Shift is set to be released on May 27. Check it out below.

New EP: Tree – The @MCTREEG EP

We’ve been waiting on The @MCTREEG EP ever since “Probably Nu It” and “Like Whoa” were released earlier this month and now it’s finally here. Chicago rapper and producer Tree is the pioneer of soul trap, a hybrid sound that’s thematically a melange of soul’s nourishing hope and trap’s unforgiving ambition. For the instrumentals, Tree combines soul samples with trap elements, resulting in beats that are simultaneously good for slow dancing and turning up. Unless you’re already familiar with Tree, this is like nothing you’ve ever heard before. Stream the EP below and download it here. It’s censored because it was released through Scion A/V, but you’ll get over it.

Soul trap pioneer Tree is back with another song from his upcoming EP, The @MCTREEG. Electing to sound more melodic than percussive, the raspy-voiced Chicagoan verges on the edge of blues, infusing emotion into nearly every syllable. What’s interesting is that he’s able to employ this blues range without sounding melancholy. Even as his voice emotionally wavers, Tree remains as upbeat as his springy instrumental. Listen below. Tree is really onto something with “soul trap.”

New Music: Tree – “Like Whoa”

After a solid 2013, which saw the release of his excellent mixtape Sunday School II: When Church Lets Out, raspy-voiced Chicago rapper Tree is back with another “soul trap” joint. Aiming at Black Rob‘s cultural monopoly on the phrase, “Like Whoa,” Tree wrestles the term from Black Rob‘s grip and gives it some new life. More triumphant than boastful, Tree encourages us to put in the necessary work, not necessarily just for ourselves, but for the people who support us. For Tree, shining “like whoa”isn’t about showing what you have; it’s about showing who you represent. If you really care about them and what they’ve done for you, you have to shine.

If you frequent Tumblr or SoundCloud, you know that artists constantly coin weird, seemingly interesting terms to describe their music. Most of the time, these terms aren’t very reliable: it’s the same old stuff. Tree‘s coinage, “soul trap,” actually means something. Sonically and lyrically Tree combines the encouraging hope of soul with the unrelenting ambition of trap. His upcoming project, The @MCTreeG, is being released through Scion A/V in the near future. The 5-track EP drops on December 12th and showcases his talent as both a rapper and producer. “Me And Mine” is a track off the project featuring Casey Veggies and some insidiously jazzy production courtesy of Merge and Deezy. New Video: “Grown Up” – Danny Brown

Danny Brown leads an interesting life. A few months ago we got in a glimpse into that very life when he teamed up with Scion A/V to make “Grown Up.” While we saw an unforgettable visual, it kind of overshadowed by the song. Thanks to director Greg Brunkalla and a cool ass little kid (We should totally call him Baby Bruiser), this has changed. Now the words and images are equally potent. Admittedly, this kid isn’t as cool as the kid in the unofficial “Theraflu” video. He still gets respect though.

By the way, the song is still censored, but you’ll get over it.
