We wrote about Tyrone Briggs‘ song “#Cold” when it first dropped and we’re happy to inform you that it’s still just as chilling. For the video, the Staten Island native puts his coldness into context, showing us how and why he became so hardened. As we said in our initial coverage, “This is a revenge tale told by a man who got his revenge and thoroughly enjoyed it.” Watch below.

New EP: Tyrone Briggs – Scattered Thoughts

Every borough of New York City has played a significant role in the history of New York hip-hop and hip-hop at large, but these contributions aren’t equally acknowledged. Staten Island native Tyrone Briggs feels this lack of acknowledgement, but he fights for recognition in spite of it. His new EP, Scattered Thoughts ,is his latest step into the ring. Rapping over a diverse collection of instrumentals, Briggs conveys his thoughts on New York hip-hop, relationships, bloggers and more. There are no guest artists, but Briggs is so versatile that he holds his own without assistance (This is probably why he references Allen Iverson on “Superstar”).

The ultimate appeal of the EP is Briggs’ unrestricted willingness to explore different sounds. This openness isn’t equally rewarding on all songs, but when it works, it’s powerful. “Somebody,” for example, features a heavy sample of Gotye‘s hit “Somebody That I Used to Know.” It’s surprising to hear a rapper appendaged to the poppy ballad, but after experiencing Briggs’ intervention, it feels perfectly natural. “Loser,” which samples Beck‘s “Loser,” isn’t as successful, but Briggs makes up for it on “Cold,” a menacing Sean Nathaniel-produced song that features Briggs at his most vitriolic and technically proficient.

The truth hurts. On “Cold” Staten Islander Tyrone Briggs gleefully highlights the reality he’s learned to accept: no one owes you anything and few people will go out of their way to help. It’s a bleak outlook, but Briggs commits to it, using the chilling Sean Nathaniel-produced instrumental to mercilessly castigate the people who don’t share his outlook as well as the people who attempted to exploit him before he adopted it. This is a revenge tale told by a man who got his revenge and thoroughly enjoyed it. Listen below.

With rapid-fire flows full of braggadocio and worldly truths, Briggs pummels Sean Nathaniel‘s swirling, epic beat. Regardless of if you heard of Tyrone Briggs before, he’s clearly a force to be reckoned with. Rappers take notice. His Scattered Thoughts EP is coming.

New Music: TailrMdeLvn – “(You)niverse”

British duo, TailrMdeLvn, have been gaining a buzz since releasing their debut project Scattered Thoughts. Now, hoping to keep the momentum going, the duo is gearing to release their upcoming project London Vintage Nights, which will be released this August. From the upcoming project, they released the first taste of what we can expect in the from of “(You)niverse.” The track, which was produced by Kutthrowt, shows the unique blend and sound coming from the duo. This definitely makes me anxious to see what else they have in the works.
