<p>His Highness Sasha Frere-Jones, music critic for the most-esteemed <em>New Yorker</em>, has let slip the original draft of his review of Wu-Tang Clan&#8217;s <em>The Wu </em>in 2000.  It is in its natural environment, an email to his editor, and is prefaced by the following:</p>

<p>Here is the 12-inch mix. I have the razor blade out right now. Sorry I didn’t file earlier. I was up until 2 AM building a voodoo doll and dousing it with gasoline.</p></blockquote>
<p>His unabridged thoughts on Wu-Tang post-<em>36 Chambers</em> is a definitive take on the old-school versus the Wu-school, and sorry, but you can&#8217;t help but think of Odd Future.</p>
<blockquote><p>The Wu share few imperatives with hip-hop’s old-school program (provide funk, talk charming shit in unison, discuss pants) or it’s new school business plan (provide robotic semi-funk, talk ugly philosophy, discuss dentistry).</p></blockquote>
<p>I don&#8217;t think SFJ can help but think of the Wolf Gang either &#8212; here are two <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/sfj">tweets</a> he sent out last night with some intriguing comparisons: &#8220;If Tyler had one beat as good as anything on &#8216;Black Up,&#8217; [by Shabazz Palaces] there&#8217;d be a future to argue about. OF = Crustified Dibbs via Atmosphere.&#8221; and &#8220;Recordings aside, few are as compelling on stage as Tyler. This gen&#8217;s HR. But what do kids think of Bad Brains recordings? Often, not much.&#8221;</p>

</strong></span>That&#8217;s also a question of gender. Tyler the Creator can apparently say anything he wants and still rack up reasonably good sales and lots of critical approval. Could the next Beyoncé come out of the gate like that? Now, that&#8217;s slightly skewed, since they&#8217;re not doing the same things. (Odd footnote: song on new album, &#8220;4,&#8221; co-written by Odd Future member Frank Ocean.) I think we are waiting to see if a black woman could enter the marketplace, politics be damned, and make it work. Chances are it is not as certain a bet as being the intensely charming good girl.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="display: inline; font-weight: bold;"><strong>Comment From N. Judah</strong></span><strong></strong><br />
As you say, the gender politics of Beyonce&#8217;s album are somewhat contradictory. Does Gaga actually present a coherent politics of gender in her music itself? And do you believe the contrast you make is affected at all by the fact of Beyonce&#8217;s marriage to a massively famous man?</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="display: inline; font-weight: bold;"><strong>Sasha Frere-Jones</strong></span><br />
This is an interesting point about Beyoncé, in that she&#8217;s a public figure in a public couple. They don&#8217;t hide much. They go out and there hasn&#8217;t been much rumor in a few years. But her main persona move is the &#8220;wronged woman.&#8221; It started on &#8220;Bday&#8221; amidst some rumors around Rihanna and Jay-Z, but that story died down. The persona hasn&#8217;t, though (see &#8220;Best Thing I Never Had&#8221;). She may not do transgression but she certainly does pissed off.</p></blockquote>
