Philly MC Ryshon Jones offers up the artwork and release date for his upcoming album, “You’re Safe Now.” Slated for a 5.19 release, Jones links with VICE to deliver a project that will reach far beyond the music, acting as a tool to direct and influence societal shift. Accompanied by an upcoming short film, (same title) “You’re Safe Now” promises to be Ryshon’s most impactful work to date, conjuring up emotion and thought, while begging the question — are we really safe?

“Why You Wanna Be Perfect” is the first video release off Ryshon Jones’ latest project, Hope Is A Dangerous Thing.The track is inspired by women’s irrational need to look perfect. Ryshon‘s lyrics focus on self esteem issues he witnessed and questions whether the perception of beauty perfection is even inked in reality or not. The monochromatic visuals match the intense lyrics well. The video is memorable due to its haunting quality layered with Ten Twenty-Six‘s eerie production.

The dark, mutated sound of Ryshon‘s singles is definitely present through the full project, making for a murky, so-late-it’s-early type of listen. The Philly rhymer’s knack for natural flows and surprisingly catchy little hooks shine through and keep the experience afloat, while the molasses-sticky beats keep it all weighed down.

New Music: Ryshon Jones – “American-Dreamless” (prod. HighLeef)

The economy is supposedly on the upturn, yet misery and malaise still abound. On “American-Dreamless” Ryshon Jones invokes this disappointing reality, provocatively asking what’s the point of pursuing the American Dream if everyone no longer believes in it. Rapping over Highleef‘s crawling, subtly militant instrumental, Jones plows through the fog, searching for answers to his question. His anger is palpable and it builds as the song progresses, manifesting in his increasingly accelerated delivery, but it never becomes consuming. It’s almost as if Jones has previously pursued the path of pure wrath and knows its limitations. Thus, he keeps his anger in check, wielding it, yet never letting it wield him. Perhaps that control is what allows him to continue ambulating through the fog, searching for the American Dream despite knowing that dream killers lurk in the shadows. Listen below.

New Music: Ryshon Jones – “Three Kay” (Prod. Thelonious Martin)

“A Grammy award-winner said he don’t hear my passion / that sound crazy to me, ’cause I’m spittin’ my heart / These rich niggas soundin’ lazy to me,” Ryshon raps with pain and poise. To say you can’t hear his passion, the conflicting magnetics of his mind, on “Three Kay,” would be pretty crazy. This track, framed by a line borrowed from 3K–“Let me hold you down ’cause they shut you down when you speak from the heart”–finds the Philly MC getting a lot of weight off his chest about the industry, artistic pressure, and his past mental anguish. “I’m deaf to a naysayer / ‘Cause these days they hate you then they fans a day later,” he gripes in one of many instances of calling out hypocrisy in hip-hop. Thelonious Martin‘s beat provides a perfect, haunting backdrop for this kind of late-night vent.
