The girl RoxXxan drops a new single, unapologetically titled “Y Lie” (featuring Footsteps). From beginning to end, she doesn’t miss a beat, running through the track with back-to-back punch lines that leave you in awe of her lyrical mastery. You can check out the track here.

Known for being a risk taker and for bringing positivity and self-awareness to her music, she unsurprisingly doesn’t hold back in this track. Glints of influence from Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” catch the light as she sends a warning to “her bros and girls” about the fakes with effortless and frankly genius repartee, whilst the influence of Missy Elliott and Wiley — artists she’d previously cited as pillars of influence — undoubtedly help shape the pace of her raps and the fantastic word play.

RoxXxan is a lyrical queen and has never been one to take prisoners; this Birmingham rapper is out for it all. From her effortless flow to her fierce voice, one cannot help but vibe to her confident sound.

Previously working with UK grime royalty such as Bless Beats, Donae’O and Mikey J and having her music promoted by Zane Lowe, DJ Target (1Xtra), Swerve (Kiss) and MistaJam (Radio 1/1Xtra), she has already created a legacy as being an experimental innovator with singles such as “Ouchie” where she put her own spin on Nas’ 2003 song “Oochie Wally.”

That single single-handedly let everyone in the industry know she is not afraid to shake up even the greatest sounds to make them her own, and we are more than ready to hear it.

Check out the new single, as well as an exclusive interview, below:

RESPECT.: How would you describe your sound?
RoxXxan: I’d describe my sound as raw, honest UK Rap, which includes Grime, Garage, Dubstep, Drum & Bass and UK Hip Hop.

What inspires your music?
My life and the people in it inspire my music. Everything I write is about a situation or a feeling I’ve felt in real life.

What are your plans for 2018?
My plans are to keep releasing music all year. Next month, I am releasing a body of work called FOR HER which is for every form of HER! This project is different to anything out there at the moment, different to anything I’ve done before and I’m really excited to show the world. I am also doing loads of festivals this Summer, so you can come and check out my live show [and] go to my social media for all the updates on my live schedules!

Could you briefly describe your partnership with Tiger Beer?
I’m featured in their latest campaign, [titled] “The Uncaged,” as an uncaged talent (rapper) the world is yet to discover! The campaign features talent throughout the globe who use that talent and creativity for a greater good.

What do you feel makes you stand out most as an artist?
I think being unapologetic about who I am. How I express myself day to day, I am not afraid to be me, it’s taken me a while to get here but I am comfortable in my own skin now, every day more so. I love menswear fashion, and I love being glam and wearing a full face of make-up…people who do not fit into the norms of society can relate to me. I think a lot of artists are scared of who they really are, where I try and embrace it.

What words of advice could you offer to those inspired by your movement?
Be yourself, as everyone else is taken! Never give up! Believe in yourself! Talk to people – find likeminded people, reach out and share how you feel.

Anything else?
I am writing a musical theatre show called Suffrageddon which is being hailed as the new Hamilton! I play the lead Emmeline Pankhurst, and it’s a modern day take on the story of the suffragettes. We are doing live dates this summer around that as well which is so cool, the support we have had for it is amazing. Emmeline Pankhurst was a British political activist and leader of the British suffragette movement who helped women win the right to vote. It’s so important to keep pushing for women’s rights today and every day, and I am all about a powerful woman so it’s amazing to be part of this project.

I can remember when I first heard about Roxxxan back in 2011 by way of The Streets‘ Mike Skinner; since then, the ups-and-down of her career (as well as her immense talent, of course) were front and center — all the way up to last year’s autobiographical “Back To Live.” Now, the London-by-way-of-Birmingham emcee is back with some fire for 2017.

This week sees the release of her new track (and visual for) “Crud,” which is produced by long-time collaborator Mikey J. Simply put, Roxxxan is just as on fire lyrically as she’s ever been, absolutely obliterating the hard-hitting production. We definitely need more of this in the game right now.

Check out the visual for “Crud” above and cross your fingers for more where this comes from.
