Last month, Wave Matthews delivered his highly-anticipated project titled”Matthews 14:25“, a complete 5-track EP from start to finish. A week after it’s release, the CT-native held his first ever listening session in New York City. The event was hosted by Genius’ Head of Artist Relations, Rob Markman. Rob had collaborated with Wave on a track earlier in the year titled “Boring,” which garnered much success, especially with the ladies, so it was only fitting for the iconic journalist / rapper to anchor the interview.

The two sat and chopped it up for a few, speaking on the meaning behind the project’s title, Wave meeting Craigy F, how they started their collective #RIDGESZN, future plans and much more. Matthews then performed “Matthews 14:25” in it’s entirety, alongside a live band and brought out Craigy F one-time for their collab “Timeout.”

The event was captured in full by EyeAmCortez and produced by Ryo, which you can tune in on above. Also be sure to stream/purchase Wave’s new EP, now available on all streaming platforms!

Hip-Hop is sacred: not only for the artists and musicians that honor the pillars, but also for the storytellers that help bring the culture into the mainstream. This isn’t always an “if you can’t do, teach” situation; the path many journalists take don’t end their personal passions for creating music. Case in point: the highly-revered Rob Markman, who has reported on Hip-Hop on various formats (currently, via Genius) and has decided to bring his musical vision to reality with the new album Write To Dream. While many of his Rap peers (ie. DJ Khaled, Wiz Khalifa, Royce Da 5’9) show support on the project, it’s incredible to see how Markman stands all his own, displaying a style of flow and subject matter that keeps with tradition while showcasing a transparency into the life of the man behind the pen (however that pen is used).

Adding to Write To Dream comes a new visual for “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” which features Kirby Maurier and sees production from living legends Justice L.E.A.G.U.E. The Rook-directed clip sees Markman leaning on his faith in church — which he explained to 2DopeBoyz:

I didn’t get baptized until I was 22. It was after my cousin passed away and my best friend had his daughter and asked me to be Godfather. I won’t say I’m a deeply religious person, but I’ve always found comfort and peace in church. I wanted the music video to have that same peace, so I reached out to the video director Rook and he brought the song to life.

Enjoy both “I Don’t Wanna Wait” (the music video) above and Write To Dream below. Very interested to see how Rob Markman continues his journey.

You’ve heard about it or even sung it in the midst of some action, but do you know the actual meaning behind that contagious Jhene Aiko line: “But he gotta eat the booty like groceries” Well, if you’re like most people, you think you know, but you don’t really know. Which is why Jhene hit up MTV’s Rob Markman for clarification. According to Jhene, she wanted her verse to be funny and memorable and it just so happened that groceries rhymes with “post to be.” She also further clarified that eating “groceries” is optional and could also be a metaphor for life. Check out the humourous full clip below.

Do you want to know more about the individuals that work behind the scenes keeping the industry wheels spinning? Enter the Minds Behind The Music Seminar Series, an educational program that allows driven and curious audiences to connect to those who are in the entertainment business and get an understanding of their journey. It allows people to learn first-hand what it takes to get into the music business, and the tools and traits that will keep you there.

The first series kicked off this past Saturday, August 3rd at Baruch College in NYC. A sold-out crowd awaited to hear from a panel of industry greats that included Kevin Storey (Brand Manager at Epic Records), Rob Markman (Senior Writer at MTV News), and Margeaux Rawson (SVP of Operations at Vested in Culture). The panelists offered inspirational stories about how they got started in the industry, and the trials and tribulations they have overcome throughout the years. Kevin Storey and Margeaux Rawson both grinded during college, completing internship after internship while Rob Markman worked a 9-5 in a mailroom, simultaneously cranking out freelance work.

The panelists discussed topics such as branding, social media, and the ongoing debate of print vs. digital media. They offered advice to the audience during a Q&A segment, followed by a mixer that allowed you to personally pick the brains of the three guest speakers. If you have a passion for the entertainment industry and are trying to get your foot in the door, then this is a series you don’t want to miss.
