After their rollicking set at the Summer Stage in Brooklyn, Flatbush Zombies’ Meechy Darko stuck around outside Red Hook park to take pictures with a seemingly endless stream of fans. Squeezing, with various levels of courtesy, through the crowd, past the barricade toward the man that had served as entertainer, cult leader, and instigator of mosh pits for the night, everyone was excited to get a picture with Meech. The dread-dangling, fang-wearing Zombie didn’t deny a single fan the chance to get a shot next to him as he, dead-eyed, threw up a lazy but deliberate middle finger. Even the living dead with a fuck-the-world-mentality still care about their devoted fans. As I made to the hood of an inconveniently placed black Mercedes, up to Meech, he greeted me with a dap and paused for longer than one would expect of someone this busy. Meechy Darko blessed RESPECT. with a 30 second interview–30 seconds which let a surprising amount of personality shine through

RESPECT: Hey, how’s it going man?

Meechy Darko: Watch the car there. It’s expensive shit.

R: Oh, my fault.

MD: It ain’t mine but you know, just saying, watch out.

R: Sure sure. Anyways, anything you want to say to RESPECT-mag?

MD: [Pause] I respect RESPECT-mag.

R: Right on. Anything about the concert?

MD: This was a beautiful night in Brooklyn. And now I’m gonna go do some acid

With that, Meech departed, but not before doing a few more pictures with some beaming fans. Their excitement was no surprise, the Zombies and Underachievers had just put on a killer set, and now the evening’s star was spending his last bits of energy on their continued happiness. We hope to see more of Meech soon.
