Reason is a rising artist out of California that we suggest you get to know here and now. As the newest signee of TDE Records, Reason brings more of the authentic true-to-life stories that the label is well known for, fitting right in with the current star line-up. Recently, I had the chance to catch up with this talented artist while he was visiting New York City to discuss his latest project ”There You Have It” and to detail his inspiration behind the project. Get to know Reason below.

RESPECT.: How’s NYC treating you today?

Reason: New York is dope, it’s like one of the few places I can see myself living in outside of LA. I love all the chaos and how busy it is.

RESPECT.: So you’re fresh off the Big Redemption tour with Jay Rock. How did this tour come together, and what was it like for you as a new signee of TDE to be on this national tour?

RESPECT.: So my favorite track is “Better Days” because the story, the beat and the video is perfect. Do you have a personal favorite on There You Have It? If so, why?

Reason: My favorite track from There You Have It seems to switch all the time, but one of my favorite tracks was actually a track we ended up cutting off of the re-release but was on the original, it’s called “Spring Diaries.” But as of now, my favorite track is “State We In,” it’s been the track I’ve been listening to the most and it’s the one that’s hitting home the most, just for where my life is at this moment.

RESPECT.: So I have to ask, how and why did you go with the name Reason? Let us know the story behind the name.

Reason: I feel like to reason with someone is to come to a middle ground and I feel like that’s what my music represents: being in the middle of things and on the middle ground of situations and I feel it’s the perfect place to reason.

RESPECT.: Your music contains subject matter that brings listeners closer to your actual life story, and who you are and the things that affect you as a person. Why did you choose to go this route instead of the dance-heavy route that is so popular in today’s Hip-Hop?

Reason: I just feel that the music connects better if it’s real. I make my music so you can listen to it 24/7, and not just on the weekend. I just really wanted to be able to connect with the people because I understand life is hard and I’ve gone through it and so I just hope when people listen to my music that it can inspire them to keep going and that they can come out on the other side…for me, it’s a therapeutic way to get my message out and to let people know they aren’t alone.

RESPECT.: Closing out 2018 on to 2019, what can we expect for you alongside the TDE family?

Reason: I want to finish up strong and release a couple of loose records and then try to follow-up with a small project at the beginning of the year before my official TDE debut and stay strong and finish up the tour.

Lil Wayne – Tha Carter V

Finally. Finally.

In the year 2018, fans are finally able to listen to Lil Wayne‘s long, long-awaited album Tha Carter V, an album that was 1.) supposed to be his last (is it still?) and 2.) was supposed to drop years ago, setting off what ended up being one of the biggest Hip-Hop “family” feuds in history. Now free to do as he wishes, we get to press play on the whopping 23-track project, which sees appearances from XXXTentacion, Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Ashanti and more. What a time to be alive.

Cypress Hill – Elephants On Acid

Cypress Hill is back with a new album, their ninth: the 21-track offering Elephants On Acid. With DJ Muggs back behind the boards exclusively, fellow members B-Real, Sen Dog and Bobo are having funs as the legends they are, alongside minimal features like Sadat, Brevi and Sick Jacken. SOB x RBE – Gangin II

So, is Yhung T.O. leaving the group or not? Regardless, the group is still whole on their new project Gangin II, a 15-track tour de force that sees additional appearances from YoungBoy Never Broke Again and (another collective on fire right now) Shoreline Mafia. Hopefully, this won’t be the latest SOB x RBE project we hear.

Kevin Gates – Luca Brasi 3

Following his well-received Chained To The City EP (as well as his collaborations with YoungBoy Never Broke Again), Louisiana prodigy Kevin Gates is back with a new project — the third installment of his highly-touted Luca Brasi series. 18 tracks of pure savagery to vibe to below.

Maryland’s Logic continues to disprove his haters release-after-release, and will probably end up as one of the frontrunners of his heavily-loaded release weekend. This go ’round, he drops the fourth installment of his Young Sinatra series — 14-tracks of mostly nostalgic Hip-Hop vibes with appearances from Lucy Rose, his RattPack collective, Wale, Hailee Steinfeld, Jaden Smith, the entire Wu-Tang Clan and more.

The newly-minted TDE signee Reason makes his official introduction to the big leagues by re-releasing his well-received project There You Have It, a project that — according to the artist — was how he ended up getting picked up by Top Dawg in the first place (source):

“This is what Top discovered me off of… When we first sat down with Top we were playing records from There You Have It. Top lived with [TYHI] for about a week, and that’s when he decided to sign me. The plan was to put out a new project under TDE. But instead, Top felt like he wanted to show the world why they signed me. So we went back in and remixed, remastered, and added a couple things—but not much. Top wanted to keep it very, very raw.”

As stated in the post, Reason also celebrated the milestone by delivering a new song titled “The Soul,” which sees production from MyGuyMars. It’s not his first contribution to TDE, either: the rising star also appeared on “Seasons,” my favorite cut from this year’s Black Panther soundtrack.
