Earlier this fall, Commission Music’s newest signee Chello, decided to take step back in time and create his version of Sporty Theivz “F*ck I Look Like”. The Queens native decided to show his versatility by ripping an early 90’s classic. The melody plus the lyricism of Chello definitely provides the perfect everyday tunes.

Throughout this track, you hear Chello’s passion as he talks about what sets him apart from everyone else. It doesn’t take a genius to see that Chello is bringing back that queens sound. He’s bringing that dirty, gritty, grimey lyricism that fans die for. Recently, he dropped the visual for “F*ck I Look Like”. If you enjoyed the track, I’m sure you’ll enjoy the video. Queens, New York and Canada connect on Tha Jerm’s latest offering, “Ching”.

Montreal singer/songwriter, Kalipop, links with SOI’s producer/engineer Tha Jerm, to provide an ideal vibe over perfectly composed production. The pair have worked together in the past on various projects, including Kalipop’s most recent album, NEON, which was exclusively engineered and mixed by Jerm, and also featured his production on several tracks.  You may be familiar with his sound in the world of hardcore hip-hop, as Tha Jerm has worked with many veteran rappers such as Dave East, Lloyd Banks, Jim Jones, SchoolBoy Q,  Danny Brown, French Montana, Styles P, Jadakiss, and more.  This time around, the goal was to deliver something out of the ordinary.

“The first time I met Kali, I knew she was a star.  We’ve made many great records, but when I made this beat, I knew she was going to make this one VERY special!  Her direction with creating “Ching” reflected on her situation at the time.  She wanted to express that money doesn’t judge you like people do”. – Tha Jerm

From his rugged upbringing in Queens, to hitting the books at one of the leading HBCU’s, Reno’s music is a reflection of his experiences. Part conscious grit, part party vibes, Reno creates a sound that contributes to the versatility of being a lover of music.

One of his missions has always been to change the stereotype of Black men. Taking his yearning for higher education, Reno attended Howard University, where he expanded his knowledge.

“This is definitely an anthem for all walks of life. I wrote it around New Years when I was feeling like it was time to stop talking about moves, and just make them happen! Say less is about doing more and saying less. Less excuses equals more results.”

FUBU’s Keith Perrin checked in with Brandon ‘Scoop B’ Robinson on the Scoop B Radio podcast. Press Play Below To Listen!

There are a few things about the FUBU clothing brand that stood out: they had the coolest sweater vests and hockey jerseys, “Fatty Girl,” a single from the clothing line’s FUBU Compilation album was and still is THE BOMB. They had women with voluptuous bodies that are actually theirs and not surgically altered. 

Additionally, LL Cool J rocked his FUBU clothing line to the fullest and it paid off big. LL also had the coolest wardrobe on the UPN hit show, In The House.

Back in the early stages of the FUBU brand in the 90s, FUBU’s founder, Daymond John, now most recognizable from the hit show, Shark Tank, had a vision.

He stuck to it: create quality clothes at a fair price.

The Queens, NY native balanced time working full-time as a manager at a local Red Lobster restaurant and investing into the FUBU brand.

He and his Queens, NY buddies J. Alexander Martin and Keith Perrin invested into that vision by actually hand-sewing hats, and T-shirts and selling them at New York Coliseum and making a pretty penny, daily.

Their hard work would pay off. But they also got a huge mainstream co-sign from fellow Queens representer, LL Cool J.

LL Cool J recorded a 30-second ad for The Gap, where he name dropped FUBU by saying “for us, by us” in his lyrics while wearing a FUBU hat.  

The Gap fell asleep at the wheel and didn’t realize it until months later. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

“He looked at us and saw the determination in our eyes,” FUBU’s Keith Perrin told me on Scoop B Radio.

LL Cool J was at the top of his game at the point. He was transitioning from rapping to acting.

According to Perrin, companies like Nike and Timberland were looking to do partnerships with LL. But the rapper, turned actor remained loyal to the hometown guys. “He’s from Queens just like us,” said Perrin.

Perrin vividly recounts giving LL Cool J his first endorsement check while he was on the set taping the video for his hit, “Phenomenon.”

“I went out there and gave him the check in an envelope,” he said.

“And he said: ‘what’s this?’ And I said: ‘this is the first distribution check.’ So he sits down and opens the envelope and says: ‘man, we making this kind of money from clothes?!’ It was $75,000 dollars and he says tell Damon [John]: ‘I need a red Ferrari!’ And I was like: ‘L you just got $75,000, you can put a down payment on your own Ferrari.’ But it was just an amazing thing and an amazing time and he’s a great guy, The dude is 100 percent loyal and dedicated to the brand.”

What a great story. Today, the brand is reportedly worth $6 billion. FUBU is also featured at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture.

Queens-bred emcee, Yung Reno returns to deliver his most recent audio gift, titled “Queens Get The Money“.  The track exhibits a laid back, nostalgic 90’s era vibe as Reno serves dope bar work over bass infused production, joined by a drum pattern that’s well known to the avid hip-hop listener.

With his rap alias embodying the crime and gang-pervaded streets of East Elmhurst Queens, changing the stereotype of black men is his goal.  He composes a mosaic equipped with identifiable, conscious topics, while still enjoying the party or emphasizing on his experiences in the gritty streets of New York.   

Yung Reno creates one sound that contributes to the versatility of him being a music lover of all kind. His previous project, Crown Royal, is a smooth listen compared to some of today’s most popular hip-hop.

Postal worker by day, writer any other day, Anthony Canton III is the man with the plan when it comes to poetry and spoken word.

Insert his latest project: Selfish. Selfish is the follow-up to the poetry book Finding Peace in the Storm.

Selfish takes the reader on a unique journey of self-indulgence. As per Amazon: Canton III reflects and ponders the decisions he’s made in life through spoken word. As the story weaves through topics that are relevant then and now, the lessons that land on his doorstep give him a new reality that he must come to grips with. It’s a personal story with anecdotes about life and what makes him feel like he’s selfish.

The questions he asks of himself will make you do the same. Explore humanity through his words in Selfish.”

According to Canton III, he finds the most challenging part of writing cutting through the fat of words to get to the meat of what he’s trying to say. He seemed locked and loaded in Selfish, however. “This book is special as it’s the most unique poetry book ever,” Anthony Canton III tells RESPECT.Mag via e-mail.

“It’s the ultimate human story, weaving powerful emotions with thoughtful takes on life that makes the reader ask themselves questions the author has. Just as the author has found himself in writing the book, the reader could apply it to their lives and learn things about themselves they never thought. It makes people think in a way that’s profoundly unique.”
