New Music: Que Feat. Young Dolph – “Weak”

Que has yet to top his breakout hit “OG Bobby Johnson,” but since gaining national attention he has kept fans busy with a boatload of quality music. On March 16th, he plans on continuing that with a new mixtape titled The Sixth Man. Getting fans ready for the forthcoming release, the Atlanta rapper releases a new track, “Weak.”

With help from Memphis’ Young Dolph, who is fresh off the release of a new project in High Class Street Music 5 (The Plug Best Friend), the southern rappers provide listeners with plenty of examples of when an individual is considered weak. If you’re catching feelings, falling out with your partner over money or snitching, then Que and Dolph are talking to you.

New Music: Que Feat. Ty Dolla $ign – “Standout”

Que is due to put out his mixtape, Can You Digg It?, on August 19th and just to get his fans ready for it, he has released the single, “Standout,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign. The Sonny Digital produced track has a smooth, laid back flow to it but it wouldn’t be a Que track without some of his racy, signature hooks. “I ain’t never been in love but I love the head,” sings Que.

New Music: Que feat. August Alsina – “Diamonds”

New Music: Que ft. Lizzle & Trey Songz – “Too Much”

With Que‘s debut EP, Who Is Que, dropping on Tuesday (March 25th), the “OG Bobby Johnson” rapper decided to release a new cut, entitled “Too Much.” The song, which will appear on the EP, features Trey Songz and DMV artist Lizzle. The track is a remake of Lizzle‘s “Too,” which has become a hit in the DMV area. The catchy track has the potential to be a radio smash–check it out below.

New Music: Lupe Fiasco – “Thot 97”

There was once a time where people would unjokingly say, “Lupe Fiasco is the greatest rapper ever.” Though only a brave, possibly delusional few would dare make that claim after Lupe‘s last two albums, Lupe is clearly dedicated to once again making that an acceptable statement. On “Thot 97” he raps over the instrumental from “OG Bobby Johnson” by Que. Lupe‘s performance here is genuinely flawless, combining his signature wit with a patently unique flow that melds perfectly with the fierce instrumental’s hostile atmosphere. Rather than merely rapping over the instrumental, Lupe elects to rap with the instrumental, allowing the beat’s menacing tones to sublimate into his delivery, which subsequently becomes just as percussive, dynamic, confident and threatening as the beat itself.

This stylish and highly technical fusion with the beat should be taken seriously. Though Lupe‘s album Lasers was met with hostility for its apparent commercial leanings and Lupe‘s seeming unwillingness to push for instrumentals that weren’t so pandering, what stood about the album was that Lupe nonetheless took the songs seriously. No verses were dialed in; he actually sat and wrote to those instrumentals as if they were freshly made by Kanye. On “Thot 97,” we see a similar dedication. The difference is that this song is just plain better because Lupe released this on his own terms rather than because of his label’s coercion. All that to say this: perhaps Lupe never stopped being a contender for GRE. His last two albums just featured good rapping over bad songs*. Listen below.

*Being a good rapper and being a good songwriter are two very different things.
