The masquerade as a bleak apartment hallway quickly evaporates as Dante Jones and Drew Love of THEY. enter the visual, causing the camera and scenery to contort throughout the visual for “What You Want.”

In their interview with RESPECT., the L.A. based duo emphasized their companionship with a sinister sound in their music and lyrics; the grunge rooted sonic makes constant appearances in both subtle and pronounced ways. From the chants in the beginning of the song, which the visual accompanies with a driving shot of bright hallway signs, to the guitar riff crawling through the chorus (which prompts the camera to begin spinning wildly), the pair’s unapologetic eccentricity shines through in the video. Alongside the edits come flashes of Drew & Dante romancing women and flirting with debauchery, as the visual eventually shows shots of THEY. partying alongside their people.

“Coming out to L.A., it just hits you like a stack of bricks; all that money, all the women- they just force their way onto your lap. I think it can definitely affect your music depending on how you write about it,” Drew Love told RESPECT. Dante followed by emphasizing “some people get chewed up by L.A., and by the industry, and get spit right back out.”

For a comment on the visual, Drew Love said:

“‘What You Want’ is an energetic song and we wanted to do a video that has a funhouse vibe to it… I always loved the old school Hanna-Barbera cartoons from back in the day, and I was glad we were able to recreate those signature doorway scenes with some dope video trick. Psycho Films again did an amazing job of capturing the unique energy we put into this song. This may be our favorite video yet.”

THEY.’s affinity for outlandish visual edits is clearly an idea that they pronounce. The video for “U-RITE” dropped in early February and features a very similar, spacey aesthetic, to compliment an equally erratic song. PsychoFilms (Instagram here), provided creative direction in both videos, and will hopefully make a return in providing their twisted imaginative minds for another THEY. video in the future. Both “U-RITE” and “What You Want” are coming off of Nü Religion: Hyena, which dropped in late February.
