During a meeting with a bipartisan group of senators at the White House on Thursday, U.S. President, Donald Trump referred to Haiti and African nations as “shithole countries.”

As per The Washington Post, two sources briefed on the conversation say that during the portion of the conversation about Haiti — which came at the top of the exchange that led to the “shithole” comment — the president questioned why Haitians should be given specific consideration.

“Why do we need more Haitians, take them out,” President Trump reportedly said.

According to that report, someone else in the room responded: “Because if you do, it will be obvious why.”

Those words don’t sit well with many. That many includes MSNBC host and National Action President, Reverend Al Sharpton. “The deplorable statements by President Donald Trump while meeting with a bipartisan group of Senators at the White House regarding an immigration deal goes beyond racial insensitivity,” Reverend Sharpton said to RESPECT Magazine in a released statement.

“For the President to make these remarks just after he was quoted as saying all Haitians have AIDS and Nigerians live in huts demonstrates a consistent pattern of racism and bigotry. It is further concerning that he is doing it in policy meetings that will impact laws in this country and abroad.”

Reverend Sharpton believes that President Trump’s comments have been consistently racist and insensitive throughtout the first year of his presidency. “Trump uses white nationalist rhetoric to continue to explicitly define, disrespect, and destroy communities of color,” said Reverend Sharpton.

“His lack of presidential decorum is a disgrace to our country’s highest office.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the only federal holiday dedicated to a person of color will be celebrated on Monday.

Reverend Sharpton believes that President Trump has once again shown his character by his recent remarks. He wants to see more done in response to President Trump’s statement on Thursday. “We must challenge the Senate and Congress to repudiate President Trump’s comments and every Senator that was in that meeting should publicly denounce him,” he said.

“They should also explain why they didn’t say anything in the meeting – and if they fail to answer, they should be targeted by the civil rights community as accomplices. This is the ultimate disrespect to hundreds of communities who believe in the American Dream – the same dream of equality and justice that Dr. King had. We will not let Trump or his Administration forget these words when we vote this year or in 2020.”

During the Golden State Warriors’ media day Warriors point guard Steph Curry was asked whether he and his team would visit the White House to celebrate winning their 2017 NBA Championship with current U.S. President Donald Trump.

Curry was adamant in expressing his disinterest in visiting the White House:

“I don’t want to go,” said Curry . “That’s kind of the nucleus of my belief…(But) it’s not just me going to the White House. If it was, this would be a pretty short conversation.”

When pressed further the Warriors All Star stated:

“We don’t stand for basically what our President has – the things that he’s said and the things that he hasn’t said in the right times, that we won’t stand for it,” Curry said. “And by acting and not going, hopefully that will inspire some change when it comes to what we tolerate in this country and what is accepted and what we turn a blind eye to. It’s not just the act of not going there. There are things you have to do on the back end to actually push that message into motion.”

Well, this morning President Trump let Curry know via Twitter that he wasn’t invited:

“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team.Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!”

Retired NBA player Craig Hodges weighed in on the Warriors’ decision on Scoop B Radio. Hodges was blackballed by the NBA after he handed a letter to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush during the Bulls’ championship visit to the White House. The contents of the letter, according to Hodges made President Bush aware of the mistreatment of poor people and people of color in the United States.

“When I look at what the Warriors have decided to do, I guess not to go and because of Trump, I am somewhat dismayed,” Craig Hodges told me on Scoop B Radio.

“I feel like every American should get a chance to go to the White House. Because this is what you pay taxes for. You know, so you get a chance to see it and at the same time, I feel like it is a chance for you to go and air your grievances with the top man.”

Added Hodges:

“So I think there is a couple ways to be handling and you know, everyone has to do it their own personal way, but I feel like it is not an opportunity for every citizen of this country to get to do it and as a champion, it is something special to do. But at the same time I can understand the political slam as far as not going.”

Steph Curry is hardly the first member of the Warriors to voice his displeasure with President Trump and his administration. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has been vocal as is Curry’s teammate Kevin Durant. When asked whether he’d visit the White House, Durant stated his claim also. “I don’t respect who’s in office right now,” Durant told the press over the summer.

“I don’t agree with what he agrees with, so my voice is going to be heard by not doing that. That’s just me personally, but if I know my guys well enough, they’ll all agree with me.”

Curry nor Durant are the first athletes to elect not to visit the White House.

Former New England Patriot Martellus Bennett and even Tom Brady were noticeably missing in D.C. when the Patriots stopped by the White House to celebrate their Super Bowl win.

In the past, NBA Hall of Famer and current Charlotte Hornets owner, Michael Jordan skipped the ritual in 1991 when George H.W. Bush was president. It’s been said that after the Chicago Bulls won their first championship, Jordan said: ‘F*** Bush I didn’t vote for him.’

Earlier this week, ESPN Sportscenter anchor Jemele Hill sent a tweet that had everyone talking.

Hill called current U.S. President, Donald Trump a “white supremacist” and the most ignorant, offensive president of her lifetime, stating:

“Donald Trump is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists.”

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that that was a “fireable offense.”

So it’s not a surprise that it didn’t come back. But I understood where he was coming from and that Bush wasn’t his homie but when Clinton was in office he hung out with Clinton and golfed with him so that let them know.”

When asked whether he could remember any other instances where Jordan took a political stance, Hodges cited the infamous time Jordan was asked who he was voting for in an election and Jordan told a reporter that ‘Republicans wear gym shoes too.’ “That shows your opinion,” said Hodges.

“You can do that because you control that mechanism that says: ‘no I am going to endorse or I am not going to endorse.’”

Hodges if you recall, was blackballed by the NBA after he handed a letter to former U.S. President George H.W. Bush during the Bulls’ championship visit to the White House. The contents of the letter, according to Hodges made President Bush aware of the mistreatment of poor people and people of color in the United States.

When asked about the Warriors’ stance on not going to the White House, Hodges was diplomatic.

“Well for me, I tell people it was one of the coolest days in my life man,” Craig Hodges told me on Scoop B Radio. “I have always looked at the place that the White House is and understanding the power that it holds. But also that it is a museum and I am a historian.”

Hodges was also firm, stating:

“When I look at what the Warriors have decided to do, I guess not to go and because of Trump, I am somewhat dismayed that you, I feel like every American should get a chance to go to the White House, because this is what you pay taxes for. You know, so you get a chance to see it and at the same time, I feel like it is a chance for you to go and air your grievances with the top man. So I think there is a couple ways to be handling and you know, everyone has to do it their own personal way, but I feel like it is not an opportunity for every citizen of this country to get to do it and as a champion, it is something special to do. But at the same time I can understand the political slam as far as not going.”

The New York Metropolitan area was infused with happenings yesterday. The Puerto Rican Day Parade was a hit during the day in midtown Manhattan, Hot 97’s Summer Jam was the place to be in the early evening at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. But, the late night belonged to Melky Jean and her Carma Foundation in Manhattan’s West Village.

The Grammy-nominated songwriter and sister of musician Wyclef Jean, not only celebrated her birthday, but she also celebrated the ten year anniversary of her non- profit and it’s Gemini’s Give Back event at Invite Only nightclub.

Long before the Haiti Earthquakes in 2010, Carma has been addressing the needs of Haitian people. Geminis Give Back is always a highly anticipated event which has garnered the support of various celebrities such as Anderson Cooper, John Legend, Patti Labelle, Ashley Graham, Hill Harper, Vivica Fox and Lynn Whitfield.

“It was surreal,” Melky Jean told me via text message. “A dream come true.”
